  1. Tips for lowering fat and calories when you order food from a Chinese take-out restaurant.

    Do...

Reduce the amount of meat in your meal.

Order more vegetable dishes or dishes that have a high proportion of vegetables, such as Beef with Broccoli.

Order steamed rice. Filling up on steamed rice will mean you eat less of the other dishes.  Another reason to eat rice is that it is a complex carbohydrate. Besides being low in calories, complex carbohydrates boost the metabolism.

Stick to Cantonese cuisine if possible.  Cantonese dishes tend to be lighter and use fresh ingredients.

Let the restaurant know your dietary needs so that they can accommodate you if possible.

Cut down on sodium the day you are planning to order Chinese food.  Most Chinese restaurant dishes have a very high sodium count.

    Don't...

Order deep-fried dishes such as Kung Pao Chicken, General Tso's Chicken, Mu Shu Pork, or even Egg Rolls.

Order fried rice. The eggs in fried rice mean a high cholesterol count.

Order dishes with nuts (another reason to say no to Kung Pao and General Tso's Chicken).  In moderation, nuts are quite healthy, and a staple in most Asian diets. In fact, recent studies indicate that peanuts (which is not really a nut at all, but a legume) may even lower cholesterol. But take-outs use way too much. Unless you can persuade them to reduce the amount, steer clear of all the tempting chicken and nut combinations.

    Order dishes with heavy sauces.

One final tip: when searching for a good take-out, my normal strategy is to find a Chinese restaurant that offers take-out and then dine there one evening - preferably during their peak busy hours. If the food is good, then I'll order take-out from them.

  2. Egg drop soup is chicken broth, green onion, and an egg. Low in calories, high in protein.

Dumplings, wontons, etc. are much higher in calories.

A good choice would be any seafood or chicken-based dish where the fish or chicken is either steamed or stir-fried, and which includes plenty of vegetables. But even the beef and pork dishes that aren't deep-fried would be okay, since they don't contain all that much meat.

Try moo goo gai pan, made with chicken and "chinese cabbage" as one of the lowest calorie main courses.

I always get the garlic shrimp, which comes with broccoli and red peppers, and steamed white rice (not fried rice). My favorite place will also add shiitake mushrooms on request.

  3. Yes i know fo a fact egg drop soup is very low in Calories. and steamed dumplings on the bright side is a ten times better choice then fried dumplings. so your saveing again there. I'd be happy with that.

But really if you want good chinese you have to go for the unhealthy dishes every once in awhile.

and whats the fun in eating healthy all the time u know? take a break, get some nice general tso's chicken or orange chicken or somthing and smile

  4. Authentic Chinese food is very healthy; it's high in vegetables and low in carbs with a healthy amount of meat (even though I'm vegetarian I know you need your protein!  If you're not going to eat tofu...).  They use very little fat - stir frying is healthy because it uses only a little oil at very high temperatures.

Americanized Chinese food is very greasy however, so if you're interested look up authentic recipes and make them yourself.

  5. not much food in a chinese restaurant is healthy or low calorie. you can check the menu for a diet plate, my favorite chinese joint makes a shrimp and veggie in lemon sauce that is awesome. the dumplings are high in sugar, carbs calories and sodium. the soup probably not that bad. most chinese food is very high calorie.

  6. I think you missed the boat...

    what is in the soup???

    dumplings same as biscuits

calories,,,  is it on the can??

homemade?? unknown your water could have calories..

I have never met a Chinese food that was not visibly healthy

with the veggies and the meat and the other accompaniments.

If you have to diet,, sorry veggies are the way..

  7. Obviously the egg drop soup is lower and healthier. Any stir fried vegetable dish or a low fat chicken and vege. would be good for a diet. I also make eggs foo yung with shrimp.

  8. I don't see how it's possible that egg drop soup could have many calories, the dumplings, I don't know...
