I am trying to assign credits for my high school freshman/sophmore. What do you need to cover in an Algebra 1 course for it to be considered algebra one? thanks for the help.

  1. It depends on your state's requirements.

    Call your state's education department.

  2. It is not as much a more advanced course,   but it does have a rather unique, and different approach, however no, I would not give credit for elementary algebra on a algebra 1 level.

Have them go through all the course levels, from pre-algebra, algebra 1 and 2, geometry, and advanced mathematics (calculus and trigonometry) and assign the credits accordingly.

Math needs to be learned/taught incrementally to both benefit the student, and any course they may want to take in college that requires a great deal of math.

We have always used Saxon with great success, but now our son thinks differently, he is not a give me just the facts kind of guy, and that is why we are looking into Jacobs for him.

I do agree that the books are a bit difficult to assign grade level wise, since you start with Jacobs where your child is at, and take it from there.

    Just my opinion.

  3. Yes it is, according to the description of the course found on the Rainbow Resource website.  Go to http://www.rainbowresource.com and search the site for "Elementary Algebra",  their descriptions are usually very accurate.

  4. How to solve for variables in simple equations (eg 4(2+x) = 7)

How to graph lines and quadratics.

How to factor and solve quadratics.

How to solve systems of equations.

    The basics of trig functions.
