Um, the Isle of Wight is part of the country of England, despite being an island, while the Channel Islands (there are several of them) aren't parts of the UK.  Unlike the UK, they're not in the European Union.  Their domestic policies and currency are theoreticly independent.  Their head of state is the Duke of Normandy, rather than Queen Elizabeth, although that happens to be the same person.  The Channel Islands, unlike the Isle of Wight, have no representation in the UK Parliament.  They have their own parliaments.  The practical advantages of that status have to do with tax regimes.
