  1. It hasnt shut down yet ... but  just read this article in Mumbai Mirror which let you know what exactly happened .....

The government has asked the management of Esselworld to reconsider its decision to close down the city’s first amusement park.

Essel group, which runs the amusement park in Gorai, had taken a decision last month to close it down after a series of protests by local residents against the company’s plans of setting up a Recreation and Tourism Development Zone (RTDZ) in the area. The number of visitors to the park have also come down in recent years and the RTDZ is part of a plan to expand the amusement park into an entertainment and recreation zone.

Nilesh Mistry, senior vice president of Essel Infraprojects Ltd which manages the park said that after a series of meetings, the board of directors had decided to shut down the amusement park.

“But we have been asked by the government to revoke the decision considering that the place is a landmark and employs nearly thousand people,” said Mistry who added that they are now waiting for the government to arrange the promised meetings with local residents to resolve the issue.

B D Sanap, state labour commissioner said that officials from the company had met him a few weeks ago to discuss plans to close down the amusement park. “They asked me how to close it down I have asked them to make a formal application for shutting it down,” said Sanap.

Industrial and commercial establishments employing a certain number of workers have to approach the labour department for permission to close down operations.

Gorai has been the venue of protests against the plan to set up a RTDZ in the area. On February 17, thousands of residents from the area had marched to the gates of amusement park. The park had shut down for a few hours.

Though the company is keen to resolve the dispute, residents of the area do not seem to be receptiive to the idea. “People here are clear that they do not want a RTDZ in the area. But the company is trying to revive the plans,” said father Alwyn D’Silva, parish priest from Bhayandar church who has taken part in the protests.

The 64-acre park was set up in 1989 and around Rs 90 crore has been invested in the project. The number of visitors has remained stagnant since 1994. While earlier the park would see anywhere between 12,000 to 14,000 visitors on weekends, it now sees 40 per cent less visitors. The number of visitors went up in 1998 when the Water Kingdom was added to the facility, but since then, the numbers have come down drastically.

“We wanted to make the facility a complete entertainment destination. But the project has not been able to grow,” said Mistry.

The park management blamed the fall to a number of factors, including the increasing number of malls in the areas.

........So therefore it is still not clear iff the park will continue or not .... I stay close to essel world .. and i have seen a global pagoda being built there as a part of the new project .. so i suspect if it wud actually be non operational ... Hope the answer was helpful
