Is Essex really that bad? What about Chelmsford?

I've heard a lot about Essex being full of chavs and such, but what's so bad about it? Surely, it's a nice place to live, right? I know there's good and bad places no matter where you go, so what's good about it?

no, essex really isnt that bad. at least where i was raised it wasnt. you just have to pick the right town or village.

Essex is fine.  A lot of the comments in the Media  that have little truth in fact...   Lots of nice places,  good shopping areas,  And what about Bas Vegas at Basildon.   The leisure centre to beat them all.  Lots of pretty villages,  specially in the North of the county,  Nice coastal places.  lots of super restaurants,  and  quite a few affluent people,   Its a great place to be...   Near to London  for shows and theatres  and top sporting events,    So don't anyone moan about it.

Essex is no worse than any other county,everywhere has good and bad area's.

I lived in a beautiful village just outside Chelmsford called Writtle,quaint church,duck pond at the bottom of the village green.

Chelmsford is a great town,it's the county town of Essex.Some of the other places named already below are nice too,i would not worry about people being chavs etc,it is as bad as saying in my day living in the area, that the mods/rockers were a bad lot?,i don't think so,so there is nothing so wrong with having a fashion as such.

Also South-end- is not all bad,Rochford is lovely. Are you thinking of going to live in Chelmsford or just wondering where the most chav's live?,not being smart just wondering. Good luck with your research.  From an old rocker.

Chelmsford is probably Chav city, but there are some really lovely places in Essex Danbury, Halstead, Flatford, wickham bishops, Maldon, Rochford, there all lovely places.  It's the towns that are a bit rough although Maldon is a lovely town.

Places you want to avoid are Southend (where i live) Basildon (c**p hole) parts of Wickford, chelmsford etc.  All the larger towns are not so good.
