Question:

Is Evolution and Creation all just speculation?

So ive read up on evolution (big bang theory) also creation. people say scientists have scientific facts for evolution...but then i read scientists just speculate on things. As for the bible ive read we have no real proof and that there is no scientific facts to back the bible up, so pretty much everything is just speculation and really humans do not know how the world came about and humans do not know if the the creator of the universe was God? so in other words.. we know nothing. is this true?

  1. No. The Bible and the Catholic Church love to say that science is based on speculation because science is their main competitor. This is part of the reason I became an atheist, but that is besides the point. What people don't understand is that the idea of evolution and the big bang theory are basically proven. The reason why we still call it the "big bang theory" is because there are some big and small holes we haven't filled yet, but we are getting suprisingly close to doing so. One of the biggest questions when it comes to the big bang is *what* caused it? People say that we have no idea, but we do. Right now the running theory supports the string theory. It says that two string particles called "branes" collided. This is based on more than speculation. Speculation is different from theorizing. People don't understand the difference. Speculation is just wondering and guessing. Theorizing is making a very educated guess based on other proven scientific fact.

There is a saying that I just love, but I can't remember who said it. It is something to the effect of "People that believe in creationism only support the idea of evolution even more by showing that their brains still haven't evolved from that of an ape." I just love that saying. Its mean, but I love that saying.

I've spent about 5 years studying the big bang. And although it isn't much, I have a very good understanding on the principal of the big bang, and I am here to tell you that it is real. Although there are some thigns that haven't been figured out yet, is there ANY evidence supporting God? NO! There is not a shred of evidence, much less any proof that there is an all knowing, all seeing dude up in the sky watching down on all of us. Some say "The Bible is all the proof they need." well that is picking and choosing because most Christians don't take the Bible seriously. They see it more as "symbolic" because some of the ideas are just crazy! So to make up for some of the problems, well, the entire freaking book, they say "oh this new generation of christians have come to except that the bible isn't all true, and is symbolic." So they are dissregarding the Bible... then what evidence do they have of God? They just totally pushed aside their one shred of "evidence", which it really isn't to begin with!

We do have evidence of evolution and the big bang theory. Unlike most hard-core chirstians, we aren't afraid to admit that we have been wrong before. Learning from our mistakes is what drives science forward. Previous mistakes lead us towards the big bang theory, and evolution which are now basically proven. Christians are very afraid to admit they don't have a shred of proof. That spells it all out for me.

  2. Evolution is in biology, and the Big Bang is in cosmology, so they are not part of the same scientific theory. You are wrong to say that we know nothing. There is much evidence to support both evolution and the Big Bang, but there is none at all to support the creation myths of the Hebrews, Hindus, Chinese, Sumerians, Babylonians or any other group. It is good that you are reading both sides of the issue. I think that in time, if you continue to do so, you will see that science has the only real explanations for the universe. We have ideas about how Earth and the solar system were formed from existing matter. Just saying, "God did it", "Marduk did it" or "Brahma did it" is really no explanation at all. The beginning of the universe is difficult for anyone to explain. One can ask that if gods exist, who created them? If someone says a god always existed, it is more logical to say the universe always existed. Gods are even more difficult to explain than the universe, after all. Inventing an even greater complexity does not explain a great enough complexity.

  3. The origin of matter and life is unknown. Evolution is an observable fact. The existence of god is unprovable. Keep reading, there's a long way to go yet.

  4. 'So ive read up on evolution (big bang theory)'

we don't know much but it seems silly to jump to conclusions, if their was a god however I don't think he would be so vain to punish you for not believing in him

  5. Biological evolution has nothing to do with the big bang, except in so far as the big bang eventually formed a Universe that was suitable for the appearance of life on at least one planet - that's Earth, by the way, about 9 billion years later.

It is a favorite tactic of creationist leaders to confuse the two topics.

The observation that the North American hawthorn maggot fly has produced an new type of fly adapted to the apple flower and fruit is not speculation.  While the apple is related to the Nth American hawthorn, it is not the same plant and flowers and fruits at different times, The apple was introduced to Nth America less than 500 years ago and the new type of fly was observed in 1861.  Attempts to interbreed the two types of fly are unsuccessful 19 out of 20 times, which indicates that the type adapted to the apple is almost, but not quite, a new species.

The observation of the same several endogenous inactivated retroviral sequences in corresponding parts of the genomes of chimpanzees and humans is not speculation, It indicates that the retroviruses must have infected germ line cells of  common ancestors millions of years ago.  This sort of observation is becoming more frequent as the genomes of animals and plants are now being read.

Even if no fossils linking humans with chimpanzees had been found, this DNA evidence would be conclusive evidence that a relationship exists.

There is also the fusion of two great ape chromosomes to give one fewer pair of chromosomes in humans.

The observation that other galaxies are receding from ours is not speculation.  That is with the exception of a few nearby ones such as Andromeda and the Magellanic clouds.  There were some different theories to explain this, one was derisively called the "big bang" by Frederck Hoyle who was a co-author of a rival theory.  The big bang theory predicted that the Universe would be filled with radiation consistent with a temperature of 2 to 3 degrees above absolute zero.  That was by mathematical calculation, but the radiation was not found for several years.

In 1964 this radiation was found by two people who were trying to tune up a satellite antenna for communication satellites which were about to be launched.  They did not know what it was and eventually asked an academic physicist. He recognised it as the radiation predicted by the big bang theory.  The great point of this is that they did not set out to find the radiation, it was found accidentally.

There is evidence for biological evolution, libraries full of it in fact, and there is evidence for the big bang theory, more libraries full.

There is next to no evidence for the events recorded in the earlier part of the Bible, particularly none for Noah's flood except on a local scale, probably somewhere in the Tigris-Euphrates region.  There is slight evidence for some of the material in Exodus, but it may be that the Hebrews did not escape slavery, rather the Egyptians kicked them out as they were regarded as illegal immigrants or invaders. It is not known when this happened, the Egyptians did this sort of thing a few times over their long history.

There is next to no evidence outside the Bible that people like David or Solomon existed, though there is no particular reason to doubt that they did.

Other major events like the Babylonian captivity did happen and there is evidence that some of the people and events listed in Chronicles and Kings existed since they were mentioned in Assyrian or Egyptian documents. But there is also evidence that the story of Jason and the Argonauts is based on fact.

If the Universe was created by a god, there is little evidence from biology that the god has intervened in it since then.

  6. Creationism is just speculation made up by people who want to push their religion.

The Big Bang Theory (which has nothing to do with evolution OR the origin of the universe, it's about the _structure_ of the universe) is a logical interpretation of evidence.

Evolution (which has nothing to do with the origin of life, only the _diversity_ of life) is the most well supported theory in all of science, backed by tons of evidence - http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/comdesc/

The process of evolution is an observed fact.  That organisms evolve over time to adapt to their environment is an undeniable, proven fact.  The Theory of Evolution is only about HOW they evolve.  We know for a fact that things evolve, we are just not entirely sure how they do it or what drives it.

The Theory of Common Descent is a logical interpretation of the Fact of Evolution, the Theory of Evolution, and the evidence contained in fossils, DNA, and physiology.  It states that, since we know that things evolve, and we have lots of evidence that shows relationships and lineages between species, that all species evolved from either one single 'original lifeform' or a very small set of originals.

The scientific theories here (Big Bang, Evolution, Common Descent) are NOT speculation.  They are logical, rational interpretations of evidence that make testable predictions.  They are so solid that there is no real reason to doubt any of them.  However, we will always be open to the possibility of different interpretations.

Again, the *process* of evolution is a proven fact.

And again, creationism has zero evidence for it and a lot of evidence against it.  It's the only one here that's 'just speculation.'

  7. Obviously you haven't read up on things or you would know evolution has absolutely nothing to due with the big bang.

In many hard sciences experimentation, the scientific ideal, is easily possible.  It may cost a fortune to build a device to test a theory, but it can usually be done.  Many sciences like evolutionary biology and astronomy do not have that luxury.  Evolution takes place over long periods of time when you are dealing with higher animals.  But with things like bacteria and fruit flies evolution is easy to see.  If Bacteria and viruses didn't mutate, one flu shot would fix you for life.  AIDS would be history.  Bacteria and viruses mutate and so do all other living creatures.  Geology and Astronomy deals with even greater time periods.  Normal physics like experiments simply aren't possible.  While all science is based on speculation, in these fields normal experimentation simply isn't possible.  Evidence is gathered, hypotheses are formed and debated and some achieve the status of theory after a long period of time.  But they cannot be proven in the traditional methods.  The nature of reality prevents that. In circumstances where proof is impossible what we are left with is computer modeling (which isn't all that accurate when you have lots of variables) and "the best ideas".   Proof is simply unattainable.  Lack of proof does not prove creationist speculation which makes no real attempt at accuracy.

  8. Your question highlights the difference between reading and studying. You could easily get confused if you just simply read... and not study. You will get all kinds of opinions on any topic, some are profound, and some are ridiculous. You have to decide for yourself (after some logical thinking) what make sense.

    Evolution is the truth!

Creation is nothing but a bunch irrational delusional nonsense!

  10. No.  Neither one is speculation.

Evolution has been accepted as solid science since the 1800's.  The number of scientists who dispute evolution is almost nonexistent... well below 1%.

But you really should NOT try to second-guess whether the world's scientific community is utterly wrong on a *CORNERSTONE* concept of modern biology, you really should try honestly to understand it first.   Since you are confusing evolution with the Big Bang, it is clear that you don't understand *either* concept very well.   It is *GOOD* to ask questions!   But it is not good to try and make up your mind about whether something is true, and THEN ask questions about it.

Remember:  Understanding *BEFORE* belief.  That's how scientists think.

As for creationism, that is also NOT speculation.   Creationism starts with a pre-determined conclusion that is beyond question ... the concept that the Bible is *literally* true ... and then trying to reconstruct science to fit that pre-conception. That is not speculation.   Speculation means taking a reasoned guess.  There is nothing speculative about Biblical Creationism at all.  It is *all* about arriving at a pre-determined result.

  11. No. It is not true. Evolution has nothing to do with the Big Bang or even the origin of life. They are different subjects.

Researchers in nearly every field of science use their knowledge of evolution daily.

Understanding evolution has resulted in huge advances in genetics, epidemiology, archeology, agriculture, embryology, and bacteriology… the list goes on. It has produced tens of thousands of discoveries and greatly improved our quality of life.

~~Much of society does not need a grasp of the principles of evolution to take advantage of the benefits, just as they don’t need to understand chemistry to use plastic.

Many children don’t learn the principles of physics, chemistry or evolution in school. Later, in their homes and in many simple jobs they may never need such knowledge.

  12. Evolution is not a theory that somebody dreamed up.  It is observable and observed.

Do you  know what anatomy is?  Obviously not.  Do you not realise that you can observe the evolution of the structure of complex life forms through the fossil record?  From the start of multi-cellular creatures, to invertibrates, to vertibrates, to warm blooded, to primates, to humans.

That is incredibly over-simplified, but there is a progression that if you were a geologist, biologist, palaentologist and and any kind of “gist”, you would find it as easy to see as the progression of pages in a book.

As far as theory goes, it is the mechanics of evolution that is theory – what causes changes in lifeforms.  Nobody understands the full story, but that is the challenge for science.

The universe, the world, and life on this world having gone through an evolution is indisputable for anyone with a little bit of knowledge, common sense, a pair of eyes and a mind not cluttered by myth and superstition.

  13. Science often begins with a speculation, but frequently ends with virtual certainty. When a scientist gets an idea about an explanation for some natural phenomenon, he doesn't just present the idea to the world, and say,"Look what I've discovered!". There is a very rigorous process for determining whether an idea is correct or not, and any scientific hypothesis must go through this process. If at any point in the process, the idea fails as an adequate explanation for a phenomenon, it dies a quiet death, and the original scientist may try to develop another hypothesis and start over, or just move on to something else. The scientific method I summarised above is close to flawless when applied correctly, and when errors are made, they are soon discovered when yet other scientists read the journals, or try to apply the results of someone's bad idea slipping through the cracks.

  14. yup we pretty much know nothing about how we were created or how the universe came to be

there are theories but none of them have been proven true

and nothing backs up God either

  15. Orion makes a good point.  Also keep in mind that nobody questions "evolution".  It's HOW life evolves ("by natural selection") that some people question.  How anyone can question evolution by natural selection, I'll never know.  But, they manage.  Evolution by natural selection is as obvious to me as gravity, but some people question that too.  Jeez.

Keep reading, go to collage, and keep your mind open.
