  1. These are quite good areas in many ways. Fitzroy is what we term an "inner eastern" suburb. There are loads of funky little terrace houses and converted wharehouses. A lot of designer/artsy/musiscian types live in that area. Lots of bars, little clubs and restaurants near by.   It's a short walk to Melbourne uni. One thing to keep in mind though  is that because it's close to the city there are some scummy types around and problems with alcohol/drug related violence and theft.  It also is very difficult to find car parking.

  2. I have a friend in St. Kilda and I've never been told of bad parts, nor in Brissie, Sydney...the thing to do is to research your intended home. Vic. in general is a splendid region, chock full of places to explore and enjoy yourself.

  3. Depends what street exactly, the problem with some of the inner city suburbs in Melbourne is they can go from upper class to people living on the dole in one block.  Carlton is a generally a good area though and is very close to the Uni and Fitzroy is pretty good as long as your not too close to Hoddle St.

    Stay away from Collingwood though.
