Is Florida surf weak?

I'm relocating to Jacksonville for about 5 months to attend a trade school. I live in So Cal now (grew up here). I'm looking at the surf report in the area and it says "flat" all week long. Yikes! Here you get at least 2-3 no matter what time of year. Is there ever any surf?

  1. yes, it is

  2. Compared to Blacks yes but I take it you will be going in the Winter so you will get waves. Check the poles...mayport poles on a solid nor'easter...never blows out.  Other then that you just have to be on it.   Get a longboard, something with not too much rocker and then a standard shortboard and have fun.

  3. some advice, bring a skateboard it gets good sometimes without tropical storms but thats really rare

  4. we get very good surf in jax this time of year with storms firing up the coast. the poles at mayport has excellent surf when swells hit also try jax bch pier lines up nice there. find your way around and you'll get time in the water with no crowds too. yeah we have our summer flat spells but hurricaine season brings in some really good swells. it's a lot different than the pacific and less consistant so a longboard is a good idea but we still get good waves and you can sometimes get by without rubber til december. you gotta stay on top of the weather here but over 5 months you will get in some good surf.
