Question:

Is Fogo Island worth a visit?

I am probably going to Twillingate for three nights ( 6th July to 9th July), and I am wondering whether I should have a day in Fogo.

Also, are Cabins by the Sea good? If not, where should I stay?

  2. From where are you visiting? I assume if you're going to Twillingate from three days, you're already in-province. If you're in-province, odds are you've seen an outport or two in your day. Fogo really isn't all that different from the multitude of other communities on the Kittiwake Coast and Notre Dame Bay, except that it's on an island, which is kind of cool if you're into islands. (A year of Island Studies at UPEI piqued my interest in the study of such places.) Twillingate is pretty much the "big city" of the area (population somewhere in the 3000 range), which makes it the service centre for the area and it functions pretty much like a big outport. You'll find Fogo to be much like the hundreds of other outports along the bay. But I'd still say to take a day and visit - I find it quite fun to explore desolate, sparsely populated islands, never knowing what you might come across in the woodlands that few wander through.

Also, Cabins by the Sea don't sound all that bad. Again, I assume you're entering this with the Newfoundland mindset and will be content as long as it has four walls and a roof, versus expecting a rustic Waldorf-Astoria. It's probably not a dump, but it's not going to be luxurious either.
