Yes, France was one of the important country in the 1500's like Great Britain Empire. They colonized many islands and eastern part of Canada and USA (they were actually the first Europeans to get a long term installation in North America, in the 1500's). That's why there are still many French speaking persons, and names in cities like New Orleans. That's also why 7 billions of people still speak French in Quebec (province of Canada).
