Is Freddie Roach responsible for Amir Khan’s knockout to Danny Garcia? – Boxing Special
After suffering the second knockout loss of his career, Bolton fighter Amir Khan has no stone unturned to blame his training regime for his loss. Since this time Khan could not blame the judges or the referee for his knockout, he has shifted his focus to
his trainer Freddie Roach.
In most of his post-fight interviews, Khan has insisted over changing his training regime, something that indicates towards Roach’s incapability of training Khan.
“At the moment I'm happy with Freddie but there are a few things that I want to change and I'm going to speak to my team to see how they feel about things and we'll just take it from there. I'm going to take my time, maybe watch the fight a few more times,
see where I need to improve and see if Freddie can improve me in the departments,” said Khan last week in an interview.
Since July 14, Khan has been talking about revamping his training regime to get the most out of it. Definitely, Khan’s loss to Garcia was due to his own lack of understanding. He went on thrashing Garcia without realising a counter punch could show up. Khan
dropped his defence completely just when Garcia left hook came in.
“It's a very crucial part of my career. If I am going to pick another [trainer] I need to be with the right trainer who's going to take me where I want to be and also the mistakes I make, not to make them again,” added Khan while talking about his career
and the mistakes he has made.
Khan’s first knockout to Garcia came in third round, when he was devastated with Garcia’s big left hook. In the fourth round, the Bolton proud hit the mat twice, just when the referee finally ended the show.
In all of this, instead of admitting his own mistake, Khan is blaming his coach for not training him well enough to defend himself. It should be noted here that Roach has been a career saver for Khan, after his loss to Breidis Prescott in 2008. Roach and
Alex Ariza were hired to coach Khan to success and so they did.
However, now the British-Pakistani fighter feels it is his coach who is not giving him enough time. Khan has repeatedly claimed that his excessive travelling with Freddie Roach is the main reason to why he is unable to train well. Khan even came up saying
that he wants to his trainer’s number one priority and not second.
Khan is currently Roach’s second fighter, while Manny Pacquiao is the first one. The Briton travels to Pacquiao’s Baguio City Camp in the Philippines and to Roach’s Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles to train. Considering the time he has to put in travelling,
Khan thinks it is time for him to either change his trainer or get someone who can only focus on him.
Although Khan wants to portray Roach as the culprit, it is pretty evident that the Hall of Famer trainer has his hands clean in this one. He has saved Khan’s career once before and the Briton cannot use the same excuse once again to cover up his drawbacks.
Khan was a failure to Garcia, and that is what he needs to learn instead of blaming others for his losses.
