Is Freddie Roach responsible for Khan’s knockout to Danny Garcia? – Boxing Special
Believe it or not, Amir Khan has indirectly pointed fingers at Freddie Roach for his loss to Danny Garcia. Unlike previously, Khan first admitted his mistake and then went on talking about how Freddie neglects him during the training sessions and focuses
more on Manny Pacquiao, Roach’s favourite fighter.
To a certain extent, Khan’s claims might appear to be right, but once you dig deep you will know the Bolton proud is just kicking up excuses to hide his own fault. Khan’s blunder against Garcia was not of being undertrained, it was of being over-confident,
something Freddie Roach has nothing to do with.
“I would like to thank all my fans and well wishers for the amazing support I've had from you since my defeat on Saturday night. Obviously, the fight never went as planned but credit has to go to Danny Garcia, who caught me with a good shot in the third
round that I couldn't fully recover from. I guess that's boxing, where one punch can change everything. It’s the reason so many fans love the sport. Many fighters down the years have bounced back from defeat to prove their greatness and that's exactly what
I intend to do,” said Khan after losing the fight.
Initially, it seemed like Khan is accepting his loss humbly for the very first time but it did not happen that way. Later on, in a couple of interviews, Khan blamed Roach for not giving him enough time. According to Khan, the amount of travelling involved
while training with Roach is more than the time he spends on training itself.
The Briton came up saying that he finds it exhausting to travel from London to Baguio City to Los Angeles within weeks to train.
Roach met with Khan and his father Shah Khan for dinner and the trio spoke about Khan’s future. Roach later revealed that nothing regarding firing him came up. However, Khan has been insisting in his interviews that he indeed will change his coach if he
feels necessary.
Similarly, Khan has already indicated towards adding a defence coach to his arsenal. On the other hand, Enzo Calzaghe, trainer and father of Joe Calzaghe, has offered Khan to train under him to be an ‘unbeaten fighter like his son’.
It seems like the former IBF and WBA champion has a lot of options right in front of him but he is confused about what to do. The truth, which Khan knows as well, is that Garcia took him down because he went over-confident.
In the third round, Khan started throwing a spree of punches at Garcia, without realizing that the unbeaten American can strike back. Khan stood still and his arms were below his shoulders while striking Garcia. Since it was the perfect moment for Garcia
with Khan’s guard down, the WBC light welterweight titlist delivered a hook of the millennium to the Briton, making him hit the mat in no time.
Khan lost his WBA light welterweight title once again to underdog. It was the second consecutive defeat of his career and the second knockout defeat. The British-Pakistani fighter is now upset over his loss and wants to change things to avoid such brutal
incidents again.
However, blaming others, especially Hall of Famer coach Freddie Roach will not do much good to Khan.
