Is French Polynesia really as gorgeous as it's depicted as?

YES!  We stayed on Bora Bora.  Even the hotels get on board with decorating for a pure Polynesian experience. The water is a dozen colors of blue.  Google images of these islands to see for yourself.  

Many of the native people are not so beautiful in their attitude toward you, the tourist.  Tourism is just about the only way they can survive and they resent it.  They speak French; that might tell you something.  There is a lot of poverty there.

People say it's expensive. Any excursion was $60.  (in '04). The only other expense is food.  There are always ways of getting around going into a fancy restaurants.
