  1. who cares what footballers or ex footballers do in there own time.

gary ablett was geelongs best player.

he may have not won a brownlow or a premiership but he is the best player the club has ever seen and thats all you should care about

  2. I will answer this according to all the controversy surrounding Ablett, not on his football ability that finished years ago.

There is an award that is going to be given at some stage shortly, to a player who puts back into the community, rather than just playing football.

A few names have been tossed around eg: Hird,Archer, Jim Stynes etc,are what a public figure should represent, rather than someone who is only good at booting a footy around for big $$$$s.

From what we read in the tabloids, Ablett always blames others for his misfortunes, and is trying to keep his footy name going through his sons and book.

I can't say that I have actually seen him do anything that would give him brownie points in the community to help an unfortunate person.

He states in everything you pick up on him, that he has found God. Was God ever lost ? And does finding a religion give a person licence to say that everything bad that I have done must be pardoned by the public. If he thinks that he can use the old depression act on the public, good Luck to him.

  3. How can you say Garry is selfish?  He gave so much to the fans and to game - its unfair to forget that and let his troubled life after retirement overshadow it.

He has raised two beautiful boys who have great ability and natural talent (just like him).

If he chose to live as a recluse, well in the words of Benny...such is life.  Thats his choice, so be it.

The only think I do not respect is him saying he turned to illegal drugs coz of his depression.

There is a lot more to Nathan's retirement than we will ever know and I think WE should stop being selfish and leave the poor kid alone.  If he's made that decision, then thats his choice and we should respect that.

  4. Well I think we do have to look at his on field performances ... yep.  I was a Cats fan then of course as I am now.  I think it was Malcolm Blight who referred to "Ablett kicked another 7 lazy goals".

I actually think he was as much a liability as an asset.  It just sends all the wrong messages.  Compare his 100 each year with (the new revived) Cam Mooney's 60.  Who is the better player?  The guy who pumps his team up, shares the ball around, encourages his good mates around him ... That'd be Mooney!  Which team got a flag, the one that was Ablett crazy or the one where no player kicked more than 5 goals in a game but the team averaged 23 goals a game?

Every coach had to take him to task for not turning up to training.  I guess when you're that good you don't need to train!

The Hawks got rid of him and went on to win 4 or 5 flags while Cats got none.

Luckily his namesake son seems to have a totally different spirit to him (but I do still see glimpses of selfishness that could be called 'backing yourself').

Finally Ablett always reminded me of Jonah Lomu.  Four runs per game, usually for four tries.  The rest of the time swanning around out of the action behind the play.

    So short answer .... "yep!"

  5. I generally don't comment too much on the private lives of footballers but in my eyes Ablett is doing himself no favours. It appears he is putting himself in the public eye in order to increase the sales of his forthcoming book. The latest was his public statement about him not being responsible for son Nathan not wanting to continue in AFL.

Why doesn't he just leave the poor kid be?! Or at least do his discussing privately rather than airing it for all & sundry - it just puts more pressure on the son.

People rubbish h**l out of Ben Cousins & daily posts appear in this forum ridiculing him - his behaviour has not been anywhere near as bad as Abletts, but all & sundry want to make excuses for Ablett & say what a great man he is. Not in my eyes, he's not.

  6. i think Ablett coming out with his book and all that stuff, is the reason Nathan wants to quit the Afl

  7. no he is g*y

  8. Well, interesting question, probably by nature he is, i think he was on the footy field, but he wouldn't of been the player he was if he wasn't selfish, he wouldn't of tried for those marks and goals and we would of been the poorer for it, he doesn't not have to be a saint just cause he was a great player.

There are so many who have problems, as with Ben, if he wasn't so good you wouldn't be talking about, for those of you who can remember Ablett in full flight, it was worth goin for him, i can tell you, being a tiger, we were worse than now, with no prospect of getting much better in the late 80's, early 90's and he used to tear us apart, people would say why go and watch that c**p, I'd answer to watch Ablett, he kicked over 100 goals on his own against the tigers.

That's what we should be focusing on here, how good a player he was.  Time to move on.
