  1. Depends on how you define a good trainer?  How he treats his horses?  Or, how often his horses win or are in the money.

Gary Contessa has a 14% win percentage and

a 43% in the money percentage.  According to the NYRA he is also the leading trainer at this year's Belmont fall meet.

However, according to a recent article from the Bloodhorse,   he just received a 15-day suspension in NY State and fined $2,000 for a medication positive.  Lidocaine was reportedly found in the post-race sample of the Contessa-trained Wild Vicar, who finished second in the first race at Belmont Park July 20.

Because Contessa waived his right to appeal, his suspension was reduced to 15 days from 30. He will serve his suspension from Oct. 22 through Nov. 5. Wild Vicar was disqualified for the purpose of purse earnings and unplaced in the order of finish.
