German is probably the easiest language to learn for an english speaker. Most words are similar and being a gutteral language makes it easier than something like spanish. If you intend to visit Germany, Austria or Switzerland, then it is worth learning.

If this is your first time learning a language then go ahead as it will give you the confidence to learn others.

  2. I started learning German in high school and do not regret an instant of it.  German is a very precise language grammatically, and learning it will assist you in becoming a better English speaker (if you aren't already, which is highly unlikely in today's elementary and secondary English instruction, no offense intended).  I became a much better speaker and writer of English because I learned German, which may be a bane in today's world of poor written and spoken English.  As some others have already mentioned, German and English are very similar, so learning the vocabulary will not seem all too difficult, though beware of many false cognates.  The written language is much different syntactically, but it will open your eyes as to how to write English properly.  Further, unlike what many of the others are saying about learning the language, it *is* rather important in Europe and in the European Union.  Unlike English, which has become the lingua franca of our time, and unlike French, which remains a huge international language because it was the lingua franca of previous centuries, it may not become a dominant global language, but it is the third most important language in the European Union (and indeed a few years ago, it overtook French as the second most important written language there), and learning it will open many doors into recognizing and understanding other languages like Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, and Dutch; and even Russian (which is similar syntactically).

  3. Depends.  German is spoken in Germany, Austria, and also in some other parts of northern Europe - like Switzerland.  How long are you going to be there?  If you're planning on moving there, yeah, it will come in useful.  If you're just visiting, don't bother - I didn't know any German the first time I went (as a tourist), and I didn't have any trouble getting around.  The only other language I spoke was Russian, and that didn't come in useful at all.

  4. its an awesome language but if you arent ever going to work with german speaking people or living in germany im not sure if its "worth" it...I would love to learn it though just for the sake of knowing such an interesting language

  5. I think its a unique language and I've been interested in it myself.  But with any language you have to make  sure you have someone to practice it with if not you'll forget it.  good luck

  6. No, consider...German is only spoken in less than 10 countries.(about)

try spanish....( other than USA and Brasil) the rest of america speaks spanish.

Also mandarin, chinese. They have more people than the whole continent.
