  1. I second Alwin E, I miss home, especially the hot summers and cold snowy winters for my dogs.

Also Germany has great outdoor gastronomy.

  2. i heard the economy and weather are good but if ur not a EU resident, u must know german

  3. if you believe it is then it is otherwise no

  4. Germany is a fantastic place.  I'd move here in a second if I could get a job (difficult for a foreigner over 40)...

If you are used to the states, here are a few things you might need to get used to:

    1.  The majority of businesses are closed on Sunday.  If you have family here, great... but if not things can get a little lonely every Sunday.  The Sunday closures are also a drag if you forget to buy food.  A few small shops (limited selection) stay open on Sunday, but you might have to look around.

    2.  While a few more places over time are accepting credit cards like Mastercard and Visa, many MANY shops don't take them here.  If you are like most Americans and are used to slapping down your credit card for even a $1 purchase, this will be a real pain in the back-side.  There's an "EC" card here, but (unless I'm mistaken) it is a debit card, not a credit card.  If you are just traveling here, you can't get one, as you must be a resident.

Most people pay with cash here...  I've noticed constant long lines at the cash machines as people are always short of cash...  This is one area where I wish Germany would join the 21st century.  Ya ya...  I know the argument that credit card machines and services are expensive...  but you need to get over it Germany!  (Smile)

    3.  No garbage disposals.  This debate goes on and on...  Anti-disposal people claim they are banned "because of the rats" (which supposedly multiply in some unknown water down the drain somewhere.)  So people pile their rotting food into recycle bins and set them outside their doors...  Ya...  Like no rat would even THINK of looking there.  Ha!

Plus it's a little funny to see how much waste food Germans can manually shove down their sinks...  For some reason it's ok if your fingers shove it through the holes, but not if a machine does it.

This speaks to the German "Bull headedness"...  but I'd better not go there.  (smile)

    4.  Prepare yourself to see almost nude people regardless of how bad of shape they are in.  This has nothing to do with "morality" (as many of my German relatives and friends rightfully critisize the US for being so ultra-conservative).  If you like 50 something guys with big beer bellies hanging out of their Speedos, you will love Germany.  I've learned to close my eyes very qucikly.  Ha!

Well...  There's more...  but they can wait.

There are some real plusses to living here as well.

    1.  Bakeries on almost every corner.  You can have fresh "Bröchen" (Literally "Little Breads") here for breakfast any day.

    2.  No one expects you to eat your meal in a restuarant then clear out as soon as you are done.  Lingering meals here are the norm.

    3.  Beer is inexpensive, as is wine.

    4.  People value their free time, their friends, and their families.  Expect a month of vacation time your first year working here...  That only goes up over time as well.

    5.  If you like nature, Germany is wonderful!  People really take pride in keeping their country clean and beautiful...

    Ugh...  I'd better stop now...

Bottom line is that there is good/bad about Germany just like everywhere else in the world.  If you can overlook a little "bad", there is plenty of "good" to be found.

    Tschüß !!!!

  5. the weather is pretty instabil due to climate change

  6. The economy is pretty well and stable; Germany has high living standards and a good social welfare and medical care system; cost of living is moderate, except for gas prices, which are a nightmare; the weather is typically central European with warm summers and snow in winter, sort of New England-like. In my opinion, Germany is a good place to live and would be a still better one if they moved it a little bit southwards, like, say, the latitude of Spain. That would definitely improve the climate.

  7. I like it. I got here about two months ago and I think its amazing. The ecomomy is doing great. The weather is BEAUTIFUL. The scenery is AMAZING. Shopping downtown is COOL. And its overall a very nice place to live. The weather today is sunny and cool with a slight warm breeze. Its fabbbb. =D
