Is Glitter really scarier than the mobs pursuing him?

If you read down some of the intentions of the hate-filled contributors here with a wide variety of medieval remedies for anyone who might be, or might be perceived to be a paedophile... and then compare it to a man whose most outrageous statement since his release is to claim that he wasn't to know it was illegal to have s*x with an 11-year-old, then if I had to be given a choice of which scary bogey to confront my child with, is it the bald man with the leer or the angry crowd with bricks and bottles shouting words of hate the child should be more scared of?

I agree with you.

Glitter is a vile man and no one can justify or condone the crimes he committed. I don't know all the gory details (and I don't want to), but I get the impression that his 3 years in prison were not a severe punishment.

But I do find the mob mentality disturbing, not for the hatred of Glitter, but for the assumptions and insinuations that anyone who doesn't want to join in the 'hate-fest' is somehow a supporter of the s*x-offender and as bad as the criminal.

It's not difficult to see elements of medieval witch-burning in the mob mentality we're seeing advocating vigilantism.

So let's let the authorities deal with the likes of Glitter in a legal and productive way.

Children have already been harmed by this attitude. When mothers on the Paulsgrove estate in Portsmouth were demonstrating "for the children", many left their children alone all night while they got tanked up and smashed the windows of anyone on the estate they considered 'a bit odd'.

And vigilantism only drives those on the s*x-offenders register underground and out of the supervision of the authorities, putting children in greater danger.

I would like to throw back at you your own statement 'Children can and should run away from anyone they are doubtful about. This is as much commonsense as avoiding the traffic' So what about the child who's father is the paedophile how does he or she run away? how does the child run away from the filthy pervert that his/her mother has sold them to? your statement is naive to say the least. It should have got the death penalty then the crowds would be home with their kids. If you do not feel revulsion and hatred for this scum then you are not normal. If the authorities in this country really want to protect our children they would arrest it and send it to prison for life. I am the mother of an 11 year old daughter who, last week, was leered  and shouted at by a p1sshead on the bus.

Now given the choice would she sooner deal with a mob who will be no threat to her or a man like the p1sshead on the bus thinks that treating my little girl like a sexual object? Have you ANY idea just how violently abhorrent that is? Any idea how scared she was?

My stomach is lurching and I can barely type.

Words of hate although not nice are part of a normal humans make-up. Thinking my precious child is fair game IS NOT.

While nobody should be forming vigilante mobs with pitchforks and torches to hunt down anyone they suspect of doing wrong (that's why we have police), it's outrageous for a grown man to to claim he didn't know it was wrong to have s*x with an 11-year old. Statements like that do nothing to dissuade said mobs from pursuing anyone foolish (or stubborn) enough to make them.

So while I'm not for chasing pedophiles with home-made weapons, or blowing up abortion clinic doctors, or whatever group you have an axe to grind with, it's hard to feel too sorry for Glitter, since it sounds like he makes things harder for himself by comments like that.
