Question:

Is Global Warming Real? Extinction Part of Life?

Lately, I have seen some documentaries mainly about creatures millions of years old. They talked about the temperature...every year, it seems either the oxygen is decreased or increased. Carbon dioxide changing as well. Do you really think global warming is real? I believe it's apart of life and global warming has always been around since Day 1 on planet Earth. Of course, the media never publicizes it because they want extra money(ex: hybrid cars). The climate is always changing.

Also, we've seen extinction in the past. Polar bears are becoming extinct because of the ice melting. I saw in documentaries animals who became isolated(like polar bears today) and eventually were extinct or evolved into new creatures. If it happened in the past, why can't it happen now? Polar bears are the same thing so why should it be any different? They'll probably either adapt to no ice in the next thousand years or new creatures will enter our world adapting well to the Arctic.

  1. This is more related to some of the answers so far.  Can we just get something straight here so we can focus on the issue?  Both liberals and conservatives are capable of distorting the truth, having ulterior motives, and exploiting science for their own gains.  So please don't use "you're a liberal", or "you're a conservative" to explain why someone is baised, and therefore their oppinion doesn't matter.

As for the question, yes the world has gotten hotter and colder in the past, and life has always moved on, although a lot of global warming supporters are aware of that as well.

Sith Lord- the rate of extinction certainly is increasing, but I think we can all agree that at least the vast majority of that is due to things like deforestation and loss of habitat.

  2. A hybrid car doesn't cost as much as the average SUV. So I don't think your point about the media getting extra money by hiding information, is valid.

Yes, the planet has gone through tremendous natural (i.e. not impacted by humans) climate changes.  But many of those would destroy our species or at least make it very unpleasant. The truth of the matter is, the society we now live in and enjoy is quite dependent on the current climate.  Our ports, cities, water supply systems, etc. would be pretty worthless in a climate significantly different that the current one.

But the point to realize is that just because natural processes have changed the climate, that doesn't mean humans can't as well.  Just like natural processes have caused forest fires, humans have as well.  The current warming trend, however, can't be explained by any of known natural climate factors (e.g. volcano's, increased solar output, planets orbital change), but it can be explained by the increasing levels of green-house gases (emitted from human activity) in the atmosphere.

Extinction may be a part of the natural process of evolution, but each species strives to survive.  That should be the goal of humans as well.

  3. Humans have emitted CO2 and CO2 is a greenhouse gas so we have probably added a little bit to the current warming trend.  I believe it quite likely that our contribution isn't enough to significantly alter the natural trends.  Warming is a generally a good thing.  Those that pretend it is not are pushing an agenda, whether they realize it or not.  Those pretending that it is somehow harmful to have warmer night temperatures as Dana constantly does are also biased in my opinion.  Bob loves quoting the admiral.

Polar bears are actually doing quite well.  As with most things about alarmists, facts are inconvenient things to ignore.  As you stated warming happened before and the P bears survived.  Extinction is necessary for evolution to take place.  Liberals, that also overwhelmingly support global warming, are anti-extinction and therefore against the natural mechanisms for evolution.  I say that tongue in cheek but there is a some truth to it.  They preach the montra of "were changing nature" yet they wish to control it, to regulate it, to treat it as if it were one of their government programs to be managed, but I digress.

  4. Sounds like you've been listening to a lot of propaganda (your parents aren't, by chance, republicans?). No one ever said that the planet has never been this warm, they've said that the level of increase in temperature over the past century has been dramatic. And they say that we know that co2 is a greenhouse gas, so if we continue to emit it, the warming will continue.

Yes, animals have been going extinct for millenias. Never at this rate though. The rate of extinction is increasing.

  5. No, global warming is not real. The liberals like to make things up. The polar bears have laid spawn inside the oceans, and that will hatch once it washes on shore, thus creating a new breed of bear. Temperate Bears I think is what they'll be called. We all know they're just alien spawn anyways. Hybrid cars are spawn from the dinosaurs, in fact. They never really went away. Read more books.

  6. Just because past changes in climate were natural doesn't mean this one is.  The data shows that it's mostly caused by us.

Did you really think thousands of climatologists hadn't considered that possibility?

"I wasn’t convinced by a person or any interest group—it was the data that got me. I was utterly convinced of this connection between the burning of fossil fuels and climate change. And I was convinced that if we didn’t do something about this, we would be in deep trouble.”

Here are two summaries of the mountain of peer reviewed data that convinced Admiral Truly and the vast majority of the scientific community, short and long.

  7. Scientific studies have shown that the current warming is not natural.

There are many basic scientific facts which can only be explained if the current global warming is being caused by an increased greenhouse effect due to carbon dioxide accumulating in the atmosphere from humans burning fossil fuels.

For example, the planet is warming as much or more during the night than day.  If the warming were due to the Sun, the planet should warm a lot more during the day when the Sun has influence.  Greenhouse gases trap heat all the time, so they warm the planet regardless of time of day.  Another example is that the upper atmosphere is cooling because the greenhouse gases trap the heat in the lower atmosphere.  If warming were due to the Sun, it would be warming all layers of the atmosphere.

    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;...

We know it's warming, and we've measured how much:

    http://www.epa.gov/climatechange/science...

Scientists have a good idea how the Sun and the Earth's natural cycles and volcanoes and all those natural effects change the global climate, so they've gone back and checked to see if they could be responsible for the current global warming.  What they found is:

Over the past 30 years, all solar effects on the global climate have been in the direction of (slight) cooling, not warming.  This is during a very rapid period of global warming.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/62902...

    http://www.pubs.royalsoc.ac.uk/media/pro...

    A recent study concluded:

“the range of  [Northern Hemisphere]-temperature reconstructions and natural forcing histories…constrain the natural contribution to 20th century warming to be <0.2°C [less than one-third of the total warming].  Anthropogenic forcing must account for the difference between a small natural temperature signal and the observed warming in the late 20th century.”

    http://www.pnas.org/cgi/content/full/104...

You can see this in the third graph here, where the dotted lines are just from natural causes, and the full lines are natural + human causes:

    http://www.pnas.org/content/vol104/issue...

If that’s not enough to convince you the Sun isn’t responsible, consider the fact that no scientific study has ever attributed more than one-third of the warming over the past 30 years to the Sun, and most attribute just 0-10% to the Sun.

    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;...

So the Sun certainly isn't a large factor in the current warming.  They've also looked at natural cycles, and found that we should be in the middle of a cooling period right now.

"An often-cited 1980 study by Imbrie and Imbrie determined that 'Ignoring anthropogenic and other possible sources of variation acting at frequencies higher than one cycle per 19,000 years, this model predicts that the long-term cooling trend which began some 6,000 years ago will continue for the next 23,000 years.'"

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milankovitc...

    http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/ab...

So it's definitely not the Earth's natural cycles.  They looked at volcanoes, and found that

    a) volcanoes cause more global cooling than warming, because the particles they emit block sunlight

    b) humans emit over 150 times more CO2 than volcanoes annually

    http://volcano.und.edu/vwdocs/Gases/man....

So it's certainly not due to volcanoes.  Then they looked at human greenhouse gas emissions.  We know how much atmospheric CO2 concentrations have increased over the past 50 years:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Mauna...

And we know from isotope ratios that this increase is due entirely to human emissions from burning fossil fuels.  We know how much of a greenhouse effect these gases like carbon dioxide have, and the increase we've seen is enough to have caused almost all of the warming we've seen over the past 30 years (about 80-90%).  You can see a model of the various factors over the past century here:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Clima...

This is enough evidence to convince almost all climate scientists that humans are the primary cause of the current global warming.

  8. Global Warming AND Global Cooling are real.  Both have happened many times during the course of Earth's history.  Species of life have come and gone over the years due to natural selection (survival of the fittest).  Climate, disease, predators...etc all contribute to this.  The Polar Bear is not becoming extinct at this point in time.  Their populations could be threatened in the future depending on how severe the Earth's natural climate cycles are and how well they adapt.

  9. yes i also agree with your theory.. yes something like this has happened before but here is the difference. We are poluting the air. we are poluting the water, we are poluting the land. and with our carbon monoxide we are depleating the ozone layer. This is going to be very hard on humans I think that in about 100 yrs we may have a new planet to move to but who's to say that we won't become extinct by war before then..

  10. Yes.

There are lot of evidence on this issue. Check a series of short video and articles for this issue. It's kind of urgent now.

Global warming is responsible for the intense hurricane activity, melting of polar ice and has caused drastic changes to our weather patterns resulting in extreme droughts, floods, and heat waves all over the world.

To turn the crisis around, a global concerted effort is necessary in reducing carbon emissions. To this end, increasing energy efficiency is one of the most easily implemented measures to take.
