Is Global Warming actually happening?

I have a silly geography question asking if global warming is actualy happening i have to write a paragraph and dont know what to write, and the internet isnt very helpful

Its a fact and there is no debate. IMHO the entire illusion of if its happening or not is created by the media, powered by big oil, car makers and lot of other corporation & upper elites who have their short term profits at stake & ignore long term consequences.

Let us remember, only 10,000 - 15,000 years ago (a mere blip in geological terms) the United Kingdom North of the Wash was under up to a kilometre thick ice sheet.  Additionally, the first humans walked to this island as the English Channel was a forest (the physical evidence of this is still being caught up in fishing nets).  There is also physical evidence of Savanna type existence on British soil (hippopotamus, lions, hyena etc) in our long geographical history.

It may be possible that the campfires lit by our distant ancestors started global warming, however, is is likely that only the present government would take that seriously.

It is clear that global temperatures do fluctuate (there have been many ice ages in the past) however, there is little long term evidence to prove that these temperature fluctuations are anything more that natural - the Earth entered previous Ice Ages and subsequent warm periods without mans' interference.

Global warming is happening - WHY is the question.

CO2 emissions is the government favourite as it enables them to increase taxes.

Where you measure the temperature is a problem. Rather obviously if you do this near towns the heat generated by power being consumed makes a huge difference be this anything from traffic to fridges or air conditioners etc:

It is also interesting that governments do not stop such things as flying or long distance travel to work or conferences in lush hotels in exotic locations which use lots of power. Spoil their fun wouldn't it?

Variations in solar output is also a contributory factor.

Do not simply rely on government spiel - they are lawyers and accountants and are thick as the two short proverbials.

I hate the phrase 'Global Warming'. I think it's just become part of the political agenda. What we are actually witnessing is Climate Change, which has always happened. Whether mankind is contributing to that is still an open matter as far as I can see. I'm sure you've heard that so-called Global Warming was declared official by scientific consensus some time ago. The only trouble with that is science does not work by means of consensus! It may be that the Earth is warming up. This is hardly a new phenomenon - it's been much warmer than this before, actually, in relative terms, we're still emerging from the last Ice Age.

Hard to say.  I believe we are in another warm cycle like  in the middle ages from 800 A.D. -1200 A.D.  Also with earlier measure of Carbon Dioxide entering in the air  measured getting higher in the 1940's - 1960's as the temperature getting colder winders miss leads popular talk, which global warming is.

I've obtained this information watching television programing and radio programing that explored this subject over the past couple of years to form my opion that today nature and man are warming the planet with nature being more of the problem.

If you look at core samples taken from the poles, you will see that global warming and cooling is a natural occurance that is on a 20,000 to 45,000 year cycle.  Each of these cycles has slight warming and cooling periods as well.  These mini cycles fluctuate an average of 30 years.

  I know you aren't old enough to remember this but back in the late 70's everybody was screaming and getting hysterical about global cooling.  Is it a coincidence that they are now freaking out over global warming 30 years later?  

  Basically don't listen to anybody who has a political position or leaning.  Listen to highly regarded scientists, geologists, and meteorologists.  They have solid scientific (and I repeat scientific) proof that it is a natural cycle.

Global climate change is a continuous process.  The earth is always either cooling or warming.  If it stopped doing this it would kill us all.  I think that is what is so amusing/dangerous about the people who want to "stop" global warming.

The majority of the global warming hoopla is based on couple of computer climate models that were created in the late 1980s and early 1990s.  These models have since been shown to have nearly a 100% error rate, yet the anthropogenic global warming crowd is still moving forward at mach speed.

So, when, for example, Jason K says "I believe we are in another warm cycle", my reaction is to believe the hundreds of independent experts and not a single individual untrained in the matter. This is the same as davem stating his personal opinion that "the temperature would just rise by another degree" - no science, no citations and certainly no research. Meanwhile, thousands of experts disagree...

Or highlanders with his "If you look at core samples taken from the poles, you will see that..."; my guess is he hasn't looked at any such core samples - I haven't... but the IPCC guys have... and took the results into account when they made that statement about man being responsible for GW. So I agree with him when he says "Listen to highly regarded scientists, geologists, and meteorologists" (i.e. the IPCC).

It is a shame that some people come here and give false information but that does happen. Geoweg, for example, says that GW is based on a "couple of computer climate models" from the 1980s and 1990s - the existence of this IPCC report alone shows that this statement is simply not true, he then says (but produces no proof) that the models are 100% wrong (remember what I said about people claiming 100% accuracy? Finally he repeats an oft-quoted myth about warming stopping in 1998 (as does davem). This is very poor statistics based on the fact that 1998 was exceptionally hot even for these warm days... basically, the deniers try to use the existence of one hot year (thus the next year was cooler) to refute the trend over the past centuries; it doesn't work!

The World Meteorological Organization said that the decade ending in 2007 was the hottest in recorded history; obviously the world has continued to heat up since 1998.

And Prettyjersie makes one of the two most consistent mistakes made by laymen and others without a good grasp of this complex issue: That one year can reverse a hundred-year old trend.

The other common mistake is to confuse local weather patterns with global climate - "it rained yesterday but today it didn't; this means the world is getting drier"!

I don't think humans are causing it.  It is interesting to me how geologist are almost always right on this subject.  As a geologist, I am well aware of historic changes which are the norm.  Those that necessarily fear change and reflexively blame mankind should go back to school and learn basic science in my opinion.

this is an extremely friggin hard question to answer, but I think I can answer it sufficiently enough for a school paper. Global warming is the thought that greenhouse gasses such as CO2 are building up as a waste product caused by burning fossil fuels such as coal and oil, which yes, are carbon based.

Our atmosphere deflects about 99% of the sun's heat and radiation, such as Gamma rays and ultra violet radiation. When these radiations enter our atmosphere during day, they are usually reflected at night back into the atmosphere, hence how our planet doesnt just absorb the sun's energy and become a smoking ball of flame. Greenhouse gasses (such as co2) that build up at the outer layers of our atmosphere reflect the light being reflected out back in- (SOME of the light being reflected out is being reflecting in) thus increasing overall energy output.

Much of the radiation being absorbed by our planet is absorbed the ocean, specifically the north Atlantic current, which is primarily responsible for American and European temperate climates. Energy (heat and radiation) arrives from the sun to the equator and is carried north by the ocean. Now, as there is more radiation and energy being absorbed by the ocean as energy deflected is sent back in, it is raising ocean temperatures by as much as 1-5 degrees world wide. Now the north Atlantic current moves north (hence North Atlantic current) and hits the North Pole and Greenland, which are massive glaciers and ice covered land. This ice and snow acts as an insulator, cooling the ocean and blocking the current preventing the current from going to fast.

Over the past 2 decades however, a large portion of the North Pole and Greenland have melted as a result of increased water temperature. Normally, temperatures in the North Pole are approximately always freezing or below, reaching negative in winter and around freezing during summer. Increased ocean temperature, minor as it may be, is significant enough to melt the borders of the huge glaciers more and more, hence why the glaciers have shrunk in the past couple decades.

When these glaciers are gone, so to will be our warm climates, as runaway heating will lead to an ice age. Although  the water temperatures have indeed increased within the past 2 decades, the overall global temperature has not. Estimates vary -1-2 Fahrenheit differences. This is because the north pole is still able to effectively keep global temperatures down, but as it shrinks more and more because of it's surrounding ocean waters, it will eventually disappear.

Another important character in global warming is the salt:water ration in the ocean. It relies on a delicate balance of salt and freshwater, which is being shifted tremendously by many different reasons. Much of the freshwater being dumped into the ocean is by melting polar ice caps in the north, which will eventually stop the North Atlantic Current. Countries are also dumping in huge amounts of fresh water as well, (wasteful isn't it?) as much as 2000 tons each. Most of this freshwater is sewer water.

In a nut shell, this is global warming.

On another side note, there is no threat of Antarctica melting. This notion is preposterous. Winter temperatures there are usually -70 C and in the summer it's highest is - 15 C  And there is NO WAY to melt that big block of ice, which is over half of the worlds ice and fresh water. I cant find any information about South Atlantic currents or any other Ocean currents that move south and heat Antartica. Antartica will never melt- as it is ALMOST NEVER above freezing- in short, manbearpig is a helluva lot more of a threat than melting Antartica (Antartica is the south Polar ice cap)
