Question:

Is Global Warming really as serious as everyone is making out to be?

I have to write a report for my class disputing one of the Baltimore Suns articles and the baltimore sun says that Bush is not making enough effort to lower greenhouse emissions and other countries are doing a better job at lowering greenhouse emissions. What I want to do is find some facts on why global warming is not so serious and does not need our immediate attention. (some links to gov. or crediable website would be appreciated)

  1. It is serious. But join the club. There are plenty of people on this forum who are desperately trying to "find some facts on why global warming is not so serious and does not need our immediate attention". But the stuff they scrounge up is really poor and comes from unreputable sources.

If possible I would change your premise to agreement with the Sun's article.

  2. To answer you question succinctly, more so.

As for this desire, "What I want to do is find some facts on why global warming is not so serious and does not need our immediate attention" all I can say is this is what those who work for fossil fuel industries are trying to do.

I encourage you to be more like a scientist and be objective not making up your mind before you have studied the facts. Fortunately much study has already been done. And from all the accredited peered reviewed studies it is overwhelmingly unanimous that not only is global warming occurring, but man kind is contributing to it.

It is kind of obvious since the temperature and co2 trends have been rising and not only are there natural sources of heat trapping gases but also man made as well. This begs the question of not does man have an impact on the climate but how much so.

  3. yes it is!

but dere are only a few people who care about it. Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of the Earth's near-surface air and oceans since the mid-twentieth century and its projected continuation. Warming by the addition of long-lived greenhouse gases such as CO2 will cause more water to evaporate into the atmosphere. Since water vapor itself acts as a greenhouse gas, the atmosphere warms further; this warming causes more water vapor to evaporate (a positive feedback), and so on until other processes stop the feedback loop. The result is a much larger greenhouse effect than that due to CO2 alone. Although this feedback process causes an increase in the absolute moisture content of the air, the relative humidity stays nearly constant or even decreases slightly because the air is warmer.[34] This feedback effect can only be reversed slowly as CO2 has a long average atmospheric lifetime. want some links? here they are:

    cool sites!!!

  4. 1. Al Gore's driving hypothesis is that CO2 is DRIVING the temperature up, just like James Lovelock says his Gaia models do. Problem is that these computer models seem to be wrong today, when temperatures actually are falling in sea, most of rest of world except Europe etc..

Well, maybe it's like the last Million years, CO2 is FOLLOWING temperature, because of release from sea etc, already a fact.

CO2 was DOUBLE the PPM last hot period, 100 000 years ago, and it did not "go wild" then, as the horrifying prediction is now.

The stated CO2-dependancy is very weak indeed, and may not hold (sorry Nobel committee, you may have acted too fast here, you seldom give a price so soon after a release of a hypothesis, another proof of the magical hype this has gone into?).

    2. A vast number of reports responding to Al Gores figures proof that they are wrong. More and more scientists say "this is more complicated than just CO2-dependance, nothing is unusually warm, 1998 was warmest year, cooling is more likely since then.

3 We’re going towards the next ICE-age whatever happens, so we would need CO2 then (in case it helps!), and CO2 will only be as long as oil is in stock, and that’s for a very short time, seen in a warm-cool cycle. Then my house will be worthless, as I will have 1 km of ice above me (as many other living above 65 deg latidude)!

4 Regardless of what we do to lower CO2, developing countries like China and Asia will now accelerate their CO2-production to at least DOUBLE the total (we are less than a quarter of them on earth). If any actions will be effective, it is to keep that population to use efficient CO2-reduction, anything else is marginal. Now, this is IF CO2 really contribute to GW.

    5. The clouds stand for 98% of solar heat reflection and CO2 for a fraction of a percent..! And, Clouds increase due to smog and heating.

So, we have to wait and see at least 5 years before any costly actions to increased taxes etc, especially as the sunspot period now has peaked (with hotter sun) and we surely are going into cooler climate due to that.

  5. The current administration made global climate change a political issue and proceeded to hold this country back from achieving solutions and consensus.

It is very serious.  Anyone and everyone should be trying to get good information so they know how their future may be affected.

I've got bucketloads of links, all credible.  I've picked out six that should keep you busy and give you some great info.

This is your future we're talking about, not just a class report.  You can treat this project as an opportunity to empower yourself, and you'll not only get a great grade but a better understanding of the processes involved.

    Good luck.

  6. You can read anything written  on the subject by the Wall Street Journal which is an excellent publication aimed at people with above average intelligence.

As far as the Wall Street Journal is concerned the only accurate thing that can be said about global warming is that it's hyped completely out of proportion.

Global Warming believers really hate the Wall Street Journal, but that doesn't matter because they're not in their demographic.

  7. No.  All of that carbon now inside fossil fuel used to be in the atmosphere to begin with.  Then life came along and flourished, thus creating the organic compounds we are just now harvesting, burning, and returning to the atmosphere from whence they came.

  8. Yes it is true that Temperature has gone up about .5 degrees in about your lifetime but you must consider the big picture.

It would be like looking at our housing market and saying prices have only gone down like 5% in the past week.

    http://www.koshland-science-museum.org/e...

Consider this chart which shows the temperature and the CO2 concentration (or emissions) by us in the past 700 years. The CO2 is DIRECTLY affecting the temperature and if this rate goes up exponentially as it is then we could see another 0.5 degree hike in about 20 yrs then 5 then 2. The hike where it says the "dust bowl" is where the industrial revolution occurred.

The reason why you hearing common things like the polar Ice caps are melting is because they are .. don't take it from anyone like me or the guy beneath me or above this answer but search out the answers for yourself.

The one scary thing is when you get a bunch of scientists together that have truley studied this or gave thought you will find that 100% of them agree on this and that is scary b/c it is always hard to find 100% of scientists to believe in the same thing.

DO NOT TAKE ADVISE FROM PEOPLE WHO DON'T EVEN HAVE A DEGREE IN BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES. Their beliefs are based on what people say they are overwhelmed by the hype but dont do any research.

More pics get this we have just begun our technology revolution (90s) so now we will have more proof like this to show people

If you REALLY want to know a bunch of the details just watch Al Gores "Inconventient Truth" video which has all of the statistical data that can be backed up by facts that Nobody can argue.

Lastly this teacher in a high school boils down the decision that you and I must make whether we actually believe in global warming or not.

  9. Dr.Jello is absolutely correct!

There is no need to reduce so-called 'Greenhouse gas emissions' since any of the so-called 'greenhouse gases' which man is producing, is microscopic compared to natural events.

Some basic facts for your report should include:

    1) CO2 is NOT a greenhouse gas, especially at the extremely low levels of concentration.

    2) CO2 is required for all life to exist on this planet.

    3) Mankind's contribution to CO2 levels as of latest available figures(2005), I'm using 33 billion tons converting from metric tons, is still only .014% of .038% of the total atmospheric concentration. This shows how little impact man actually could have.

Although I have nothing but utter contempt for the ignorant, arrogant, worthless 'Slime ball', that G.W Bush really is, there is only one thing in my mind that he did right, and that was not signing up to the Kyoto treaty.

I guess that only proves that no matter how hard you try, you can't be wrong 100% of the time!

  10. No - "Global Warming" is so over-hyped that it's no longer funny.

The total amount of warming is just a scant 0.5 degrees over the LAST 100 YEARS!!!

From this, the believers have extrapolated everything from continents being lost due to rising sea levels to man turning into cannibals.

And the climate hasn't even warmed in the last 10 years!

  11. Relax, a lot of people and companies stand to and are making hugh amounts of cash out of globe warming, in the 1910 to 1920's and WWI it was military tanks to destroy the world, 40's the depression, and WWII, in the 1950's it was Blacks and race riots that threatened civilisation, 1960's it was Communism (Vietnam)  1980's it was HIV / AIDS and nuclear war in the 1990's 2000 saw the world destroyed by the millium bug were every computer stopped working and airoplanes fell from the skys 2000's Al Gore and others making money from the end of the world.

  12. Just look or measure the green house gas it is not there. They like to calculate what it should be. The gas is not there.

  13. NO SUCH THING--

    The WEATHER PEOPLE SAID SO!!

They said it ws a HOAX!

    GO FIGURE!

  14. Climate change is a money and power grab scheme by bottom feeder politicians and power brokers. It's nothing to do with ecology and everything to do with money.

Con artists like Gore have enriched themselves on this issue, taking home Oscars, Nobel Prizes and millions of dollars. Meanwhile, evangelical leaders are setting up their flocks for extreme fleecing by leftist politicos like Barack Obama, who will appeal for Christian votes by talking in glowing, biblical-sounding terms about "being good stewards of God's creation."

Here is truth about global warming:

Global warming is one-half of the climatic cycle of warming and cooling.

The earth's mean temperature cycles around the freezing point of water.

This is a completely natural phenomenon which has been going on since there has been water on this planet. It is driven by the sun.

Our planet is currently emerging from a 'mini ice age', so is

becoming warmer and may return to the point at which Greenland is again usable as farmland (as it has been in recorded history).

As the polar ice caps decrease, the amount of fresh water mixing with oceanic water will slow and perhaps stop the thermohaline cycle (the oceanic heat 'conveyor' which, among other things, keeps the U.S. east coast warm).

When this cycle slows/stops, the planet will cool again and begin to enter another ice age.

It's been happening for millions of years.

The worrisome and brutal predictions of drastic climate effects are based on computer models, NOT CLIMATE HISTORY.

As you probably know, computer models are not the most reliable of sources, especially when used to 'predict' chaotic systems such as weather.

    Global warming/cooling, AKA 'climate change':

    Humans did not cause it.

    Humans cannot stop it.
