Question:

Is Global warming is the solution....melting polar ice caps are good for the planet?

do you agree with this statement, if the ice caps do melt this will case:

cold fresh water to be released into oceans of salt water which will result in a drastic climate change making the world much colder..like ice age colder

sea level will rise which reduces continental surface area anf if there is less land to reflect the heat from the sun back into the atmosphere the climate also lowers

do you feel that this is somewhat of a planetary reflex or plan for the earth to heal its self

the statement is saying that its good for the earth not humanity

  1. well kind of? kus we'll hav water! but it will endanger many animals dough!!!!!!!!! so i think it could be bad or good jus depends on the earth!

  2. If you have a tray of ice cubes and a pitcher of water on your kitchen counter, will putting the ice cubes in the water cool the room?  No.  That's only an energy transfer, it doesn't have any effect on the larger system.

And ice has a much higher albedo effect than water or land, so the loss of ice causes some additional warming, just by that.

  3. The Earth doesn't care one bit.

The animals that live on it might have a problem with it.

But be careful in predicting the future. It is hard to get right.

  4. No, it doesn't make that much sense to me.  If/when the ice caps melt, the oceans' salinity won't be THAT drastically affected--it's still a small fraction of the total amount of current liquid water in the seas.

Land *doesn't* reflect the sun's heat very well--that's why the ice caps are melting faster than the general rise in temperature would suggest.  It's called the albedo effect.

In any case, no, global warming won't lead to sudden massive global cooling as the ice caps melt into the oceans--remember, the reason the ice is melting is that it's getting *warmer*, so it won't really affect the overall temperature of the oceans.

  5. I think the solution is nuclear winter

  6. have a look at the water table

most of the fresh water we got is locked up in ice .

In glaziers and at the poles ,this is now being lost in the seas just about wiping out our fresh water supplies.

25% of the planets surface is land

75%of the surface is water and it is rising

    ------------------------------...

97%of the Earths water is salt

fresh water is only 3% of all the Earths water

most of it is beyond out reach

now much ice is melting and running into the seas fresh water lost for ever.

STORAGE or Location of % of the fresh water

    ice and glaziers 74%

    groundwater 800 meters + 13.5 %

    groundwater less than 800meters 11.o%

    Lakes 0.3%

    soils 0.006%

    Atmospheric in circulation 0.0035%

    rivers 0.03%

frozen land or permafrost is not included and represent an unavailable storage of 40%

so of the 3% about 11.6 ,is easily available to us ,in rivers, lakes and ground water surface aquifers, more and more of this is becoming contaminated

overpopulation of an extra 70 million people a year (increasing all the time )and expanding agriculture ,which uses 70% of available potable water supplies ,has brought the good(sweet) water supplies to critical levels ,some countries have been in trouble already quite a while .

Now climate change and desertification, because of irresponsible agriculture ,overgrazing and deforestation is damaging world fresh water production .

It is a good reason for concern and if we do not rectify matters by changing agricultural methods ,reforest ,stop deforestation, become more economic with water use ,stop producing more people ,stop wasting and contaminating water, we will be in serious trouble all round

and could end up looking like Mars

And it is the other way around less ice in the sea to make cold water currents ,the water turns warm very quickly once it is into the seas

Apart from Polar bear meat and Fish in the Arctic sea contain lethal levels of mercury, the water has concentrated amounts because it was locked in the melting ice ,

This contamination comes originally from the air ,And it originates from Human activity .,not from Nature

    http://dsc.discovery.com/convergence/glo...

the lost of the cold water currents will affect coastal climates through out the world ,granted some places will be able to grow tomatoes when before they could not ,but also invasive algae will take over killing fish and shrimp

    Remember the red tide.

The worst part about rising coastal water is not the loss of land it is that millions of people will seek higher ground and will start fighting the other people that are already there.

Social unrest will break out all over the planet.

    water reflects heat ,

Land with forest absorbs heat ,

but wheat  and corn reflects creating hot spots in other places .many miles away.

Sure getting rid of a lot of humanity is good for the earth ,

this is one point I agree with you

  7. THE ONLY SOLUTION TO GLOBAL WARMING IS DEATH TO ALL LIFE ON EARTH, LIKE ITS DOING NOW + STARVING ALL THE LARGE MAMMALS, LIKE 30 TO 50 WHALES PER YEAR DIE. ONE WAY TO STOP IT FAIRLY FAST IS TO GET USE OF 4 NATIONS TO PUT A 100 FEET WIDE TRENCH BY 100 FEET DEPTH AND LARGE FILTERS THEN ALL FOUR AT 20 MILES LONG TO A CERTAIN POINT THEN START A CONTINUENCE ALLOW ONLY WATER TO PENETRATE THROUGH, THUS ONLY WATER LOWERING FROM ALL OCEANS, THEN SAME 20 MORE MILES, I SUGGEST NEW ZEALAND, AUSTRALIA, AFRICA AND AMERICA UNDER  SUPERVISION. IF WE CAN DO THIS ACROSS THESE 4 CONTINENTS, WE'LL HAVE SAVED THE WHALES IN THE OCEAN AND HELPED THESE COUNTRIES TO HAVE AN ABUNDANCE OF NATURAL FRESH WATER FOR AT LEAST 100 YEARS.

  8. It sounds good on paper, but I don't think you understand enough about the Earth's mechanics to actually fully understand what the effect of the polar ice caps melting are.

The entire Earth has its temperature maintained by a series of global air and water currents.  This is driven by the temperature difference between the poles and the equator.  Warmer, higher pressured air from the equator flows toward the colder, low pressured air in the poles and this drives the currents that allow for a global thermal balance.  Now take away the poles and this will decrease, or even worse, negate this thermal balance.  It's bad for the Earth AND humanity.

    Edit:

Oh, I guess in that case, we'll probably be dead and gone before we know it.  Sad. D:  Besides, the percentage of freshwater locked up in the polar ice caps is a tiny tiny tiny percentage compared to the water already present in liquid, ionic form in the oceans.  It wouldn't be affected much if they actually did melt.

But then again, what exactly is "good" for the Earth?  It's a very subjective term.  The Earth is just a mass of metal and rock and gas just like any other planet.  Venus is lifeless, with temperatures soaring up to 900 F plus, while Neptune is a breezy -375 F.  Earth will (I hate to personify an inanimate object, but..) "adapt" to any situation presented to it because it, after all, is just a planet.  On the other hand, the organisms living on it will be affected greatly and to dire effects.  As much as I'd love to keep earth green and pretty, I don't think Earth much cares itself. D:

  9. But the Polar Bears! And Penguins.

    Stop Global Warminggg. =(

  10. A planet is good no matter what changes. The only reason we are saying it's not good is because we enjoy it the way it is. And if sea level rises, then cities and towns will be flooded forever. Humans have to think about themselves, and what they may be doing to cause this. The Earth is fine unless it blows up. All it is is rock and sand. We just made Earth our home, and we don't want to make it a mess to our disterbince. Who says Earth isn't good with sudden changes, aslong as it doens't effect us and life in any bad way.

Look at Mercury. No life, no oceans, no nothing but craters and hotness. But who says thats not a good planet. If Earth was to ever turn that way in a billion years, I wouldn't mine.

The Earth would not care. Nothing is bad for a planet except if it explodes into a trillion peaces. Then there will be no planet at all. The only thing humanity cares about is life.
