Is God the Benchmark of Morality?

"Thus says the Lord: 'I will bring evil upon you out of your own house. I will take your wives while you live to see it, and will give them to your neighbor. He shall lie with your wives in broad daylight. You have done this deed in secret, but I will bring it about in the presence of all Israel, and with the sun looking down.... since you have utterly spurned the Lord....the child born to you must surely die."

Anyone caught commiting any one of the above (polygamy, rape, infanticide) would be justly punished in society.

"Now kill all the boys and all the women who have slept with a man. Only the young girls who are virgins may live; you may keep them for yourselves." (Murder, Peodephilia)

"However, you may purchase male or female slaves from among the foreigners who live among you. You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance." (Slavery)

This is from the "One" and "Everlasting" God. YOUR God. This may be Old Testament scripture (however Jesus does condone Slavery and physical abuse in Ephesians, Timothy, and Luke) however being GOD he would be absolute and unchanging, meaning his views would be forever constant. Then we also have to consider that Jesus IS God (the whole trinity thing) so his views would be the same as his own/father`s (?) now matter how much "sweet forgiveness" is smothered on top.

So....Is God the Benchmark of Morality?

If He is; I`m glad I`m an atheist.

If He isn`t; well, you do the logic....which may be tough for some, you know, logic.

  1. Are you referring only to a biblical god that destroys his creation if they don't follow his rules? Then No.

Are you referring to a benevolent God that loves his creation despite what they do and who's sole warning is you will be the product of your choices (reap what you sew)? Then Yes.

  2. Did you know that the only reason why we are not all raped and killed is because God puts a hedge of protection around us? If we refuse His protection and are exposed to real evil, whose fault is it?

  3. Yes the bible tells life as it is, good and bad, evil and righteous.  but if you want to commiserate in the evil part it is your choice.

  4. No.  The thought is preposterous, particularly considering the quotes you've provided.

  5. no

  6. Does God have a right to judge his creation?

If anyone can use the death penalty rightly wouldn't it be God?

EDIT - the passages above are true events, though they are deliberately taken out of context...  I once threatened a man with violence at the end of a baseball bat, if you found it was my stepdad who had pushed my mother down to the ground you might think it was ok.

The very real fact that God will judge each of us one day is the biggest hate-causer against Christianity, it is a right and wrong that is not based on feelings or culture but on God's declarations.

Assume, for a moment, a God.  Does He not have a right to judge his creation, even to judge you.

  7. Nope.  "God" holds itself above its own rules.

    Smells like hypocrisy.

  8. You have done this deed in secret, but I will bring it about in the presence of all Israel>>>>>

Did you catch that..That is who this is addressed to..To those specific people during that specific time of establishment.

It is His providence to set the law, and it's His providence to show mercy to those who ask for pardon through Christ. He already is aware you can't live up to His standard. Hence His providing you with a savior.

  9. Obviously, the biblical god is evil and insane, and that is one reason religion is the greatest detriment to morality in the world.

  10. Try to separate the idea of an omnipotent deity from the opinions that certain groups of people hold about him/her.  It sounds to me that the deity (or whatever) making those statements you have quoted is pretty insecure.  (It reminds me of a toddler whose parent has just  told him that the parent will not do something that the toddler wants him to do, and so then the toddler has a tantrum.)  Doesn't sound to me like the same energy that created the universe.  Probably it's actually a minor god with way too much ambition and very little emotional maturity.
