The word mythology (from Greek([μυθολογία] (help·info) mythologia = mythos + logos)[1]) refers to a body of folklore/myths/legends that a particular culture believes to be true and that often use the supernatural to interpret natural events and to explain the nature of the universe and humanity. Mythology also refers to the branch of knowledge dealing with the collection, study and interpretation of myths, also known as mythography. The study of myths from multiple cultures is called comparative mythology.

  1. The word myth originally just meant 'story' and the definition of myth is 'a traditional story accepted as history thet serves to explain the world view of a people'

That the ancient Greeks believed their myths to be true is well documented. Whether we do today depends on who you ask, opinions vary. Hellenic Polytheists are people who follow the ancient religion today and they generally do believe in the myths.

Some people see the myths as allegories and this is where you get the idea from that the myths aren't literally true stories.

The first and major work of Greek Mythology was the Iliad by Homer which is an account of the Trojan war. In classical antiquity people quoted the Iliad just like religious people quote their sacred texts today. Up until quite recent times most people accepted that it was a work of complete fiction. In the1870s the German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann excavated the area and found the remains of Troy. The riuns of King Minos' palace has also been found.

On the basis of the Iliad and Troy, or Ilium, being found to be true you can say that Greek Mythology is basically true.

  2. How is this a great question?  Its a myth - so what on earth do you think?  Do you honestly believe the myths to be true?  are you kidding me?!

  3. All of Mythology is basically used to interpret life lessons as interesting stories. When they were first created they were believed to be true, like in the times of the Ancient Greeks. Today, we use mythology for those same life lessons, Christian mythology being the most prevalent.

  4. Great question!!!

Ummm, well, the Greeks believed in their Gods like we do our own God or Allah or whatever, right??? So it's possible that it is real, and the Greeks knew what they were doing and we don't. Maybe our God doesn't exist, and the Greek Gods do, or maybe they all exist and maybe they all DON'T exist.

    c**p. I'm confusing myself.

It could be true. It's good for the soul to question everything you've ever been taught. In my opinion, at least.

  5. to the greeks it was real, it was the strory of their gods and how they came to be ect. to us today, they are not real unless you are greek and very interested in in the old teachings. the egyptians had many gods and many stories to go with each one, were the stories real? ask an egyptian, ask a hindu if the stories about their gods are real, if they believe it, then it is real to them. if you don't believe it, it's not real to you, but the question of whether it really is real, is really hard to answer. i don't believe it was, someone had to come up with the stories, and if it was a person, doesn't it have to be make believe?

  6. Look up the definition of "mythology"

  7. hence the word "myth"ology

  8. all mythologies, Greek, Roman, Norse, Sumerian, Hindu, Christian, Jewish, Islamic, Zoroastrianism, et al. are FICTIONAL stories of the supernatural which explain the unknown but  are BELIEVED to be TRUTH by their adherents.

  9. fiction ..........Of course

    mythology is a myth

  10. Hmmm...fiction I suppose...

    Must ask my grandma...:)

  11. Greek mythology is more of like myths and fiction, you never know if its true or not.

  12. Greek Mythology is actually a mix of fact and fiction. There are historical accounts, some from other societies, that show some events and people in Greek Mythology did exist and happen. The best example is that of the Trojan War and the city state of Troy. This was long beleived to be pure fiction until the ruins of Troy were found and identified. They also found evidence of a major war being fought there. Basically, like modern religous texts, they took actual events and used supernatural forces to explain what was not clear.

  13. Mythology always points to some universal truth through allegory. Fiction is simply a non-factual story. You could say that most mythology is "fiction" in the sense that there are usually very few "facts" involved, but "fact" and "truth" are not necessarily the same thing....which is why "proving the bible (a series of Judeo-Christian myths) is a ridiculous concept.

  14. The funny thing all Mythologies to a certain degree have some truth to it, many thought the siege of Troy was just a myth, until a German archeologist found the ruins on the coast of what is now Turkey.

  15. remember greeks were politeist... that means they had a lot of gods... like there was the goddes of love, the goddes of beauty, the god that created everything, the god of the storm... anyway, that was the way they explain the creation of the universe... is the same as the catolics believe that the humanity came from adan and eve...

so if you want to believe is true, then is true if you dont then dont...

but i do think is more like an explanation than some true story... just like the 5 first books of the bible...

  16. Fiction
