  1. The greenhouse effect causes global warming.  They are not the same thing.  The greenhouse effect is the trapping of heat by certain gases in the atmosphere; they let short-wavelength radiation (light, infra-red) pass through, heating objects on the earth, but block the longer wavelength radiation emitted by those warm objects which could remove some of the heat.

    As a result, the temperature of the objects on earth increases--this last is global warming.
