Is Guatemala a dangerous country to visit? My dad is going there next week..?

The first answer is exactly correct, but he left one thing out.

DO NOT drive at night.  You can and would most likely be fine, but you run a much higher risk of robbery if you do.  The Guatemalan people are a very welcoming and gracious people so he should be fine.  He should be on high alert when leaving the airport.  That is also a trouble spot for robbers.  They scope out a target (someone who looks wealthy, possibly carrying a laptop case, or wearing expensive jewelry).  If you dad takes a laptop with him, tell him to pack it away and to not carry it on his shoulder.

I hope your dad enjoys the trip, it is a beautiful country.

No more dangerous then any other country.  It has its bad areas and its good areas just like everywhere else.  Make sure he uses common sense and he will be fine.  

Don't flash large amounts of money.

Don't wear flashy jewerly.

Don't go into strange alleys or around dark corners.

The same common sense should be applied everywhere.
