Question:

Is Gustav going to be worse for New Orleans than Katrina??

I have been comparing the two and I have noticed that Gustav may have more time to strengthen than Katrina did. Considering how fast Gustav jumped to a category 4, basically overnight is he the stronger storm of the two? My boyfriend is from New Orleans and he says that they haven't repaired the levee's good enough yet? Are we looking at a worse disaster than Katrina?

  1. I think it depends on the exact location it hits at and also if the Levees hold. Gustav technically has more power than Katrina did. We will just have to wait i guess.

  2. i don't know about how strong this storm's going to be, but i'm pretty sure that mr nagin knows what to do this time, even if bush and his dudes don't. nagin's done a good job since katrina, and he'll know how to deal with this one. he's already ordering a 100% evacuation of new orleans and the storm's probably coming late monday or early tuesday. it's well in advance.

hope the people of new orleans stay safe!

  3. it very well may be.

  4. this is gonna be one bad boy

and NO will catch the brunt of the eastern side

yep - they better get people packing

it still has a few days to move left or right

BUT - it does NOT look good

  5. Yes we are, and we are just not ready for it

  6. All of the levees damaged by Katrina have been repaired & reinforced. The levee system is getting a $14 Billion upgrade, but that won't be complete until 2011 or 2012. However, many of the improvements ARE already in place and had the current improvements been there for Katrina the city-proper would not have flooded.

If Gustav takes the predicted course it will go ashore in south central Lousiana, putting the communitie below Lafayette at risk but subjecting NOLA only to some wind and rain. Remember that 90 percent or more of the damage to New Orleans from Katrina was from storm surge, not wind and rain.

    Good luck to us all!

  7. Nothing worse! because the N.O. has not been rebuilt. Even though Gustav would be stronger than Katrina, it would only destroy those having been destroyed.

  8. Katrina did not hit New Orleans. Katrina hit the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Katrina caused the levee's to break in NOLA. NOLA did not get hit by a hurricane. Gustav will likely either hit NOLA or the surrounding area, and yes, it will be far worse. As, Katrina never hit NOLA. The levees have not been fully repaired, and will more than likely break again. This will probably be worse than Katrina, because again, Katrina did not hit NOLA.

  9. I was just watching the news last night and it looks like it could.  Fortunately, they are already evacuating the coast from New Orleans to Texas.  With the Gulf waters being so warm at this time of year, anything is possible.  The newsman couldn't even give definite answers to what's going to happen.

I live in Texas, so I will be getting a bunch of this, too.  Got some from the last one also, but that was only a tropical storm.  They have already evacuated all the oil rigs in the Gulf and most coastal towns are out of gas.

Go fill your car now, while the prices haven't gone up yet.

check msn.com for a storm tracker.

  10. Katrina strengthened to a Category 4 when it was in the Gulf of Mexico.  But it weakened to a Category 3 before hitting Louisiana.  Gustav is supposed to weaken as well.  Hopefully, the repairs made so far will be enough to hold off the storm surge that so dramatically damaged New Orleans 3 years ago.

  11. i think so but maybe less deaths because of the help with leaving its gonna be crazy lots of water holes in harvery canal if the levees were done they arent high enough only 10 ft the storm surge is 15 to 18 to 25 ft  i pray everyone is safe here
