  1. yes....toshiba announced that they will stop making the format and they were the format leaders. however there is at least one company who will still produce multiformat players that support hd dvd and blu ray and that is LG. they released a press statement and you can find it at

  2. yes...Sony wins one more time!!!!

  3. Yes, Toshiba just announced that it will stop producing HD DVD drives.  Leaving the total number of companies that support HD DVD hardware down to zero.

    Blu Ray Wins.

  4. It appears so.  Too bad because Hd dvd right now is better than BR.  Blue ray has the abillity to be better than hd later but right now it stinks. You buy a player you have to update it off the internet almost every time they make a new movie because sony is so worried about copyright violations.  Blue ray won because they offer better copy protection that is the ONLY reason.  As far as the consumer goes HD dvd is much better but the movie companies will make more money if its harder to copy the disks.  So the CONSUMER is the real loser here.  Sony got their revenge for the beating they took with beta vs. vhs.

  5. Seems like it. HD DVD was kind of an intermediate format that acheived better performance than standard DVD using an old technology (existing "red" lasers). The change to blue ray DVDs represented a complete technological change, similar to the change to digital TV in the US in 2009.

Making such a leap from one specific technology to another is consumer unfriendly (you don't want to change your format to something incompatible with existing equipment, unless the benefits are worth the risk of acceptance by the consumers). But, the advantage of blue ray DVDs over HD DVDs is significant. And, the electronics manufacturers apparently feel that it's significant enough to go with blue ray DVD as the standard.

  6. Yep. Even though it had been apparent much earlier, Toshiba (Founder of HD-DVD) just announced today that they will seize development of all HD-DVD media (Movies and Players). Universal STudios which was one of the two supporters of HD-DVD, has come out and said that they will switch to Blu-ray almost immediately. If you already have an HD-DVD player, i would suggest keeping it, and stock up on all the movies as they will go for pennies pretty soon. I wouldn't throw it away, as those movies still work just fine, but eventually, you'll want to upgrade to a Blu-ray Player if you want to stay updated in the HD movie genre.

  7. Yes, I feel horrible for the people who have invested their money into HD DVD players and combo players. When a format war rages, it is always best to wait it out. I do hope sincerely that Blu Ray prices drop so HD DVD owners don't feel so left out- and for those of you rushing out to buy  Blu Ray players- PLEASE- R.E.S.E.A.R.C.H. before you buy! Make sure the player you are about to buy has a good review and is up to date as far as upgrades. I plan on buying one but I will wait at least another year as the technology is still new and I see a lot of negative reviews on a lot of the players I research. It would be nice if manufacturers did'nt let the public decide for them, another example of the rich getting richer and you me getting !@#$ed.
