Question:

Is Hartz natural pine bedding and litter bad in any way?

We ran out of our regular Care Fresh blue bedding for our dwarf hamster, and so at last minute, we had to go to the grocery store to pick up some bedding. All we found was "Hartz Natural Pine Bedding and Litter" It pretty much just looks and feels like shavings. I'm sure it's not the best, but is it unsafe in any way? We're going to get more CareFresh bedding as soon as we can, but will it be okay to use the Hartz Natural Pine, for now?

  1. Don't use pine bedding. It's toxic to them. It can cause respiratory problems.

  2. Please don't. Pine & cedar are both known to be harmful to small animals.

Line the cage with paper towels, a small hand towel, etc. Anything for temporary use other than using the pine bedding.

  3. I really wouldn't use it, even for a short time.  You would be better off shredding up paper towels to provide bedding until you can get to the store to buy more Carefresh.

  4. No, Pine  has Lot's of harmful, toxic chemicals, it can cause respiratory illnesses in you dwarf hamster. Aspen is the best wood shavings. P.S I have a dwarf hamster too, and aren't the awesome!!!

  5. well i don't know about that bedding, but i bought bedding one time and my hamster lost all her fur, when i give her different bedding than her fur started to grow back... any more questions on hamsters e-mail me at birdgirl125@yahoo.com

  6. Pine is toxic, especially to small animals. It kills them very slowly, so having it in htere for a day or two should be fine. Don't use it regularily though.
