  1. I suppose so... if you can afford it!!

Its not really a residential area, its more a business district....its best known for being the centre of the jewel and diamond trade in London and has many extremely expensive jewellery shops.

  2. I would say it's alright, generally speaking - it's reasonably central, not that far from the river, and is fairly quiet as well (especially at weekends).  As someone else said, it's mainly a business district (jewellery and diamonds especially - but other things too), although it's not really such an upmarket residential neighbourhood: a lot of the housing is either in (council or ex-council) estates - estates that are mostly reasonable enough, mind, or is converted former industrial premises (old warehouses, etc).

Main possible shortcomings that I can think of are: (a) lack of green space nearby... to qualify that, the Inns of Court are lovely - but are small, and mostly only open to public access at lunchtimes... and (b) it's not very near to a supermarket of any size (there is a daily market along Leather Lane, the next street parallel with Hatton Garden itself, but it's "cheap and cheerful" and has quite a limited range of products, while the Sainsbury's near Chancery Lane tube is small and more aimed at passing office workers than residents).

Still, there's one excellent pub (with an interesting history..) "Ye Olde Mitre"...

Anyway, it depends on your tastes and circumstances. I wouldn't have thought it was a good area in which to bring up children, for example (lack of parks to play in, and limited schools nearby, too)...but otherwise it might be fine. In my experience, it is definitely a nice area to work in.
