Is Hawaii a good place to live?

I was born and raised in NJ but it's not where I want to stay for the rest of my life. I am 18 years old and lately I've been feeling like " It's boring here". It is my dream to live at Hawaii someday and I'm probably going to spend my college years here in NJ before I would like to move there unless I could transfer to a college in Hawaii and I could ask some friends if they'd be interested in finding a place with me. I've heard many great things about Hawaii such as the weather which I prefer warm weather over cold weather any day! I also love surfing too just to point that out there. I've also heard that it can be expensive living there but it all depends on what area you live in. Any ideas on what cities and islands would be nice to live at? Is it hard to live there? Basically do you think it's worth living in Hawaii given the right circumstances?

  1. I live in Honolulu. Its nice here. Its pretty laid back and relaxed. The weather is always perfect .. between 75-85 degrees. A decent place to live is more expensive here than most other places. I personally think that Hawaii should just be a vacation spot. Sometimes I start to feel a little trapped on the island & there are some things that aren't available here. Family lives in Illinois and getting to the mainland isn't cheap.

  2. I moved here from Boston > 30 years ago & I love it here.  In many ways, it is a very good place to live.  The weather, as you pointed out, cannot be beat.  The people are wonderful, as long as you have an open, receptive & respectful attitude.  Some people are not able to fit in here, but I have a job where I work almost exclusively with locals & have never had any significant problems.  I do think 90% of it is in your own attitude.  Personally, rock fever has never been a problem for me.  I enjoy the occasional mainland vacation, but I am always glad to get home!  The biggest problem is the cost of living.  It doesn't matter what area you live - no place is inexpensive,  But some areas are more expensive than others.  Finances will  demand that you make some sacrifices in terms of the material aspects of your lifestyle.  To me, it is worth it.

  3. What a question! Of course, Hawaii is one of the most beautiful places to live on this earth with:

    - warm weather all year round

    - warm waters of the Pacific Ocean attract surfers, divers, swimmers...

    - abundance of tropical flowers, plants and fruits

    - white sand beaches and so much more.

We say 'There is no place like Hawaii'!

However, if you want to enjoy all these wonderful things which make people want to move to Hawaii for good, it takes commitment and dedication and the right attitude.

    1.

Do your homework with research on all the islands. Best island to start out with is Oahu, as it has public transportation, lots of jobs and yet nice beaches.

    2.

Stay in touch with Hawaii through daily reading online publications of Hawaii newspapers. Pay close attention to classifieds in regards to job offers and sharing rooms.

    3.

Don't rely on other people, even if they are your friends. They might be able to provide you with advice but you got to determine what you want.

    4.

Make sure that you have housing and job lined up, before you go to Hawaii.

    5.

Good idea before moving, try a longer vacation on the island of your choice and talk to as many locals as possible.

Even if you have done all the necessary preparations, be aware that Hawaii is not for everybody to move and live there for good. Hawaii has the biggest fluctation rate in the states. Young people often get 'island fever' but guess what, if you lived in Hawaii for 2 years and after that you move back to the Mainland, it will be probably the most adventurous years of your life. And you can say 'I lived in Hawaii'!

Good luck for your moving to Hawaii project. Aloha, Pua

  4. Hawaii is okay if you come here with an open mind. It's really expensive & a lot of people have to work more than one job just to survive. There is also a lot of racism-but there is racism ANYWHERE in the world. I would suggest spending some time here on a visit-but if you plan on living here, you should venture away from the Honolulu/Waikiki area & take a trip around the rest of the island. Spend time in each part of the island. I would suggest staying on the mainland...but that's just me. I'm here for college & I have what some people call "rock fever" or "island fever". I respect the island & the people on the island, so I haven't had any problems...but plenty of people have.
