  1. The healthcare system in the US sucks. You pay high rates for insurance (I think 300-400USD a month is normal, that's what it was going to cost me at each job I had offer it) and get basic coverage.

Even if you have insurance and pay for it, you still have to pay to see a doctor or dentist (15-20USD) and for prescription drugs.

If you have to have surgery, the insurance MIGHT cover part of it, or they MIGHT try to find a way out. Many times, a surgery will be needed and you will be denied insurance coverage for it because the insurance company says it is either 'experimental' (when it isn't) or 'isnt necessary'.

  3. Depends. If you're in a union or work for our government, you probably have a very generous health insurance plan that costs little or nothing.

Most halfway-decent jobs at larger companies will provide quality coverage, and you'll pay for part of it - I pay USD$35 per week for very comprehensive coverage.

The unemployed or those who work part time can apply for public programs like Medicaid, Medicare, "Healthy New York," etc - there's a lot of them, differing state by state (New York's is very different than Utah's, for example).

I prefer private coverage as our bureaucrats and government employees are often illiterate buffoons - not all, but many.

While European and Canadian bureaucrats are often graduates of top universities, our civil service is quite poor insofar as actually serving the public. (Witness Hurricane Katrina.) I would no more trust them with my health care than I would hire a monkey to fly an airplane.

The loudest bellows for socialized medicine seem to me to be from people who don't want to (or can't) pay for it. Sorry, it's not a free good. Enacting it here would be a costly disaster - terrible care, and a tax structure that would cripple the economy.

Anyone in the US can be covered under Medicaid, if they're truly poor or low-income. In most US states, private coverage is available, and can be made to be buyable, if not low-cost.

I don't want my taxes to double or triple, and they will if our health care system is turned into another government fiasco. But some people think that if other people's taxes cover it, then it's "free." It won't work here, not even as well as it works in Canada (or even France).

People who want good health care insurance at affordable prices simply need to get better jobs. Harsh but true. But those jobs will get awfully scarce if we tax our economy to it's knees.
