Is History, or any Social Science, a real science?

My roomate and I had this argument, and I'd like to hear a few more opinions on it. The basic premise is as stated, but understand that by definition science is the categorization or classification of a series of subjects.

  1. Social science is a real science, it is the study of humans and their nature. Therefore a science.

  2. I think you can apply scientific techniques (statistics, experimental design)  to history, sociology, anthropology etc...they are not considered "hard sciences" like physics, chemistry....in the social sciences there is much room for interpretation....however even in physics there is interpretation and opinion.  I'm not sure calling something a "real science" is even that important....what really matters is has the research been peer reviewed? Is it useful?....have the biases been accounted for in the statistical analyses?
