I'm going on holiday there so I was wondering how much money would be suitable to take. Is food there more expensive than in the UK? Like what's the typical price for a bar of chocolate?

  1. no it isn't

  2. It's pretty much the same, although cigarettes are a lot cheaper and so is the beer!

Cost of living is generally cheaper too, my Dad is Dutch and lives just this side of the final canal in Amsterdam, compared to living in the same area in London it is very, very reasonable.

Bus/tram/train travel are all fairly priced and they are clean, arrrive and depart on time and usually a pleasure to use public transport, unlike in the UK.

  3. No The Netherlands is less expensive than the UK.

Holland is the name of two of the provinces in The Netherlands. It is not the name of the country.

  4. It depends on where in the UK and where in NL you are comparing of course, but they are pretty comparable (my parents live in the UK and I live in NL, so we visit each other

Comparing London to Amsterdam then definately London is more expensive than Amsterdam, but generally NL is about on par with the UK on the whole (especially in the last 6 months when you look at the impact of the diminishing pound vs the euro)

However, one thing to take into account, if you are visiting Amsterdam as a tourist, then you are going to be paying tourist prices more than likely.  Shops, restaurants & attractions etc will of course be geared up for this, so you may finder it more expensive than what you would think from my and other's comparisons

Anyway, to answer your question about what is the price for a chocolate bar, here's a link to the online shopping site for Albert Heijn (one of the largest supermarkets, although not the cheapest) a 7 pack of Mars bars is €2.19 which works out as about 1.74 pounds http://webwinkel.ah.nl/process?fh_locati...

However I also find it depends because I find that electrical goods (especially with the pound now) are a lot cheaper to buy in the UK

    e.g.

The same model of Ipod is cheaper in the UK (both from Dixons)

    http://www.dixons.co.uk/martprd/product/... 27.99 pounds

    http://www.dixons.nl/De_online_winkel/Pr... €44.99 = 35.7856 pounds

The same model of a Senseo machine from Argos (and the equivilant in NL being Kijkshop) http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/pa... 47.37GBP

    http://www.dixons.nl/De_online_winkel/Pr...

    €79.99 = 63.6487GBP

  5. Having lived in both the UK and the Netherlands, I can tell you that the price level in general is higher in the UK than in the Netherlands, although you'll encounter considerable differences for specific items. For example, food and beverages are much more expensive in the UK when bought in shops, but more expensive in the Netherlands when bought in pubs and restaurants. Public transport and taxi fares are comparable, although their service is of an equally low standard in both countries.

  6. The UK is much more expensive..
