I'm about to be a senior in high school and I'm completely freaking out about college admissions and I want to make the right choice for myself. One, of my choices is Hunter College, mostly because it is one of the few schools that are actually affordable and I want a nursing degree. I just want a little information about how good this school is before I make my final decision. Please help my out guys, I would REALLY appreciate it. ^__^

  1. As the first answerer states, Hunter used to be a great school. All of the traditional city university campuses, including Hunter, Brooklyn, Queens and CCNY, were really terrific. A very large percentage of the immigrant children of the 1930s graduated from these colleges and became members of the city's educated elite.

The city university has recently suffered from budget cuts. But before that, it also suffered from a very ill-advised "open admission" policy in the 1980s, and some very visible and ill-advised behaviors by minority faculty members such as Leonard Jeffries, that alienated donors and legislators. Between these two factors the schools all recently lost a great deal of prestige.

  2. Hunter is the best of the CUNY schools.  It has some amazing professors and is very affordable.  It doesn't have much of a reputation nationally, but that wouldn't have a significant effect on a nursing carrer (because nurses are in high demand).

  3. Hunter is OK--it used to be terrific but has suffered from budget cuts.  If you can get into their nursing, I'm sure it's fine.  Check that the local hospitals in NYC actually hire from there, though.

  4. Hunter is basically a community college! It does have some good faculty, though. If you wanted to get some kind of prestigious degree, then no way. But it's a good school for the money. For nursing, I think that would be a great choice. Good luck.

  5. darkpunkchild, The best method to find out info is to contact a student. You can start looking for contact information for New York colleges here. http://www.collegereviewed.com/New-York-... Students always to know what's going on better than outsiders since they spend so much time on campus.
