Is Hurricane Gustav going to be another Katrina?

The media is already building up sympathy and excuses for the people in New Orleans. And you get the feeling that the same people who weren't prepared for Katrina aren't prepared for Gustav and are already working on their finger-pointing at everyone except themselves.

  1. It definitely looks like it could be just as bad or worse.  New Orleans is already evacuating and local and state officials aren't about to get caught with their pants down again so if anything they're over-preparing.

You can see the projected path of the storm, and find links to local TV and newspaper coverage, live streaming webcams in the affected areas, preparation guides, plus links to the National Hurricane Center coverage of the storm on http://www.USAMediaGuide.com

  2. Dude, Its almost a Category 5 right now. Winds over 150 Mph... Gusting over 160... I think its gonna be worse than Katrina. And to think I just moved to Alabama. Sad...

  3. They say its already killed 71 people.

  4. no gustav is going to b a whole lot worse then katrina....  unfortunatley they said tht if u would put the top of the hurricane on chicago the bottom part would touch new orleans so this is one m**o. and no they are preapared they have been evacuating people from hospitals, retirement homes, etc. from the area since thursday.o and i almost forgot i was gonna go for a jog today at one of the parks and i couldnt becasue it was filled with buses evacuating people.

  5. I don't think this storm will be as large, though it might be strong, at least a Cat. 4, when it hits.  I also don't think it will have as wide an effect, and probably the repairs to the city will be at least an improvement over what was there before.  At least some of the mistakes made in planning for Katrina have been corrected.

I also wouldn't rush to cover up any feeling of sympathy toward people who lost their homes or their loved ones, even toward those who could have prepared better for the storm and didn't.  Feeling sorry for those who have had a tragedy is normal, and feeling antagonistic toward them is at best unnecessary.

  6. no it will be way way worse.

first of all the only reason new orleans got so creamed was cuz the levees broke

second of all there was a hurricane a week before katrina and everyone was like get out get out this hurricane wiill ruin u then it disappeared so everyone was like these people dont know what they are talking about by the  time katrina warnings came.

governor jindal issued contraflow and mississippi and part of texas is helping us with that. it is from 4 am this morning to 12 am tomorrow. all schools state wide are cancelled tuesday and i think wednesday.

hurricane gustav is stronger than katrina was and katrina and rita wiped out our coastal barriers and marshes so our land is worse off now. so even if it was just as weak, it would do more damage.

but no one is messing around this time all coastal parishes are manditory evacuation/ started at 8 am yesterday.

they are expecting a tidal wave between 14-20 feet

  7. You know I live in Louisiana, and already the residents of New Orleans, are complaining about the buses and the other ways of evacuation that our governor has provided. Mayor Nagin has not ordered an evacuation but yet Jindal who is our governor has sent them buses and other ways of leaving if they don't have one. And there has been statements from several officials that if they don't leave they will have to accept responsibility for themselves and their loved ones.

You can't blame the Governor of Louisiana  on this one he has done more than Blanco ever did with Katrina. The only people I feel for is the kids, they don't have a choice in leaving or staying.

  8. i thought it was but no. thank God
