Yes ING is a widely known worldwide bank.  Out of all the online banks INGDirect is probably the most well-known.

It is also FDIC insured as most online banks are.

What do you mean safe, ingdirect is ingdirect... It's not safe or unsafe.

It's a financial institution crossed with an insurance agency. And its marketing budget is mindboggling. Which means there's less money left over for other things - like service and employees and branches where you can actually open the door and talk to someone in person. It also skims the markets - which means you can get  great insurance rates as long as you have a perfect record;  but you'll be treated like you don't exist if you ever cause problems for them - like making a claim.
