Is ibuprofen highly soluble in water?

Is it less soluble at lower temperatures?

Do binders/fillers in pills effect its solubility?

Thanks.

  1. Ibuprofen is only slightly soluble in water (<1 mg/mL): http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/ibup.h...

In fact, among common organic solvents, ibuprofen is least soluble in water.  However, the addition of co-solvents does improve solubility of ibuprofen in water: http://docs.lib.purdue.edu/dissertations...

Most chemicals are more soluble in higher temperatures, but you'll need to consult a pharmacopeia to see if ibuprofen behaves like most chemicals.  Moreover, when it comes to human consumption, the temperature of the solution will be fixed, so it's a moot point.

If you want to know even more about ibuprofen solubility, you should order this PhD dissertation by Ismail Khalifeh:
