  3. Idli Sambhar is a hot favourite all over India. And down in Chennai, Idli or Wada Sambhar are good but the masala dosa is my favourite & the filter coffee is truly mind blowing.

  7. Besides idli sambar, there is Pongal vadai available.

  8. Mostly in restaurants I would say. Idli sambhar is just one among many as far as home-cooked breakfast is concerned. People don't have it everyday. We have it say once a week. Otherwise people have dosai, adai, uppuma, vadai, poori, pongal, idiyappam, semiya, apart from western stuff like sandwiches, cereals etc.

Sambhar is also something people don't have everyday. Perhaps twice a week and no more. There are so many other gravy preparations. Unlike it is popularly believed south Indian (and Tamilian) cuisine has infinite variety but usually idli/ dosa only come to mind because these are what are known outside.
