I'm wanting to try out a resturaunt that serves Indian food, but I'm strictly vegetarian. Does Indian cuisine have a good selection of non-meat food?

  1. They definitely are vegetarian friendly (they don't bash vegetarians)

Kidding...my boss eats indian and he's a vegetarian.

I love their parata (sp) bread with garlic mmmmmmmmmm yum.

  2. tVegetarian fare is common and plentiful.in  Indian restaurants  in the West or in India, they  ALWAYS offer many options. Try "Saag Paneer" with Naan bread  (Naans usually have eggs in them ) or Chapatis  in North Indian Restaurants, -- if homemade cheese is OK with you  -- you will get addicted. You could try Mattar Paneer --(Cheese and Peas).

Without Cheese, there are many otrher preps as well. Fried Okra -- referred to as Bhindi Fry is very good too Then there is Aloo Gobi (Potato Cauliflower), Aloo Mattar (Potatoes and Peas),  Malai Kofta (Stuffed Vegetable Dumplings with Creamy-Tomato Sauce) are some popular dishes.

A unique aspect of "Indian" Culture is that the Cuisine of the country is predominantly vegetarian.  At homes,  where meat and fish are used, they are done so only a few times a week.  Restaurants, however, for business reasons,  feature many lamb. chicken, fish items regularly on their menus in addition to the usual offering of vegetarian dishes

In India, however, you will find COMPLETELY vegetarian restaurants (called "Pure Vegetarian") in all cities and towns.

A good listing of Vegetarian Restaaurants (Not exhaustive, though) is maintained by the group called "Happy Cow" . Just Google it for any country/place.

  3. Yes. very much. Especially try south indian food. You will get good DOSA, IDLI etc

  4. Well chapatti is meat-free, and so are many types of Carri. And you can rest assured you find any juicy beef steak! :-)

  5. Yes, because the Indian (Hindi) people who choose to be vegeetarian are the most strict vegetarians out there.  They will divorce eac other if one eats meat just once.  It is tied into their religous and cleanliness beliefs.  If one eats meat and is part of the upper class or upper-middle class atmosphere, that person might face embarassment and the spouse will threten to divorce them unless they go into the center of the public and confess to eating meat and being foolish.  Then they must agree to never eat meat again.   My co-worker who is from India told me that happened in India in his grandfathers generation.

Indian desert are really good and the main platters for dinner  are decent.  Some of thier food smells like pure c**p and looks nasty and has flavoring that will sit in your belly for days.  Try the desert balls. The are balls of honey and some grain that is soaked in honey water and some other good stuff. They are really sweet and filling.  THEY USE NO MEAT!  Go for it, most Hindi food places love to educate Americans on their ways and foods. ;)
