My friend is a designer and want to sell some hats supporting obama. Is that legal? Or is that trademark violation?

It is legal only if you say something bad about him.  Seriously I doubt that his name is trademarked, so go ahead.  You can always go and do a search at the paten and trademark office, it is on-line and free.

i don't think he can trademark his name. he could trademark his logo but not his name.  Like how can you trademark the name Charles Brown.  There are many people named that other than the cartoon character
