Question:

Is It Okay To Take Claritin-D With Wellbutrin XL?

I read that certain drugs can affect Claritin-D, including antidepressants, which is Wellbutrin XL.

If I shouldn't take those two medications together, can somebody recommend another allergy medication to relieve congestion and coughing?

  1. Hi! It is always a good idea to get in touch with your doctor before you mix prescription medication with OTC meds. Call your healthcare professional and ask them. If it is an urgent matter, I am sure that your insurance has a help line where you can obtain this information. If all else fails, talk to your pharmacist,. They know more than your doctor most of the time as your doctor is paid by certain drug companies to promote their drugs and a pharmacist knows about all the meds out there. Good luck and I hope you find an answer soon.

  2. Claritin and Wellbutrin can be taken together.  The antidepressant category they are probably worried about in what you read is MAOI inhibitors, which are in a totally different class of medications and which interact with a lot more drugs than Wellbutrin does.

Just as a general rule, though, do always tell your doctors about ALL the medications you take, including over-the-counter ones like Claritin or things like Tylenol or herbal supplements, if you take them regularly.  You are smart to be concerned about possible interactions.

  3. You should be fine with both - I take it!

But call your doctor to give you peace of mind
