If you are only interested in the nightlife why not just go to Pattaya?  Pattaya is only around 2 hours by bus from Bangkok.  The bus leaves from the Ekamai bus station off a Sukhumvit Skytrain stop and will cost around 120 baht.  

Pattaya is cheaper to get to, hotels are cheaper than Phuket or Bangkok, transportation in town is only 10 baht by baht bus, cheap restaurants.  Lots of bars, malls, street vendors.  Cheap hotels may have pools too!  

Pattaya Beach is only good for walking, sunbathing, shops, restaurants, malls and bars - foreigners who want a "beach type" swimming experience go to nearby Jomtien (20 baht.)

Or, fly to Phuket on the bottom of Thailand for 1 week and spend more money.  In pattaya you will get more bang for your buck!

As far as safety goes, if you act like a real jerk you will probably get in trouble.  If you drink or use drugs excessively you will probably get in trouble.  If you hang around with or seek out dopers you will probably get in trouble.   Your biggest problem will probably be spending too much on things or services.

It will always be safer (and more fun) travelling with friends etc but if you really want to go at it alone - then there's no major drama. Phuket is a relatively safe place but it helps to practice common sense of course.

For example it's much easier for people (or lady-friends) to rob you of your wallet etc if you were to get drunk. Btw I'm not sure what the legl drinking age is (i think it's 18) but believe me checking of IDs is virtually non-existent there. They're more interested in your money than liquor laws!

Use a bit of common sense and there should be no problems.

Don't worry, it's safe..

It is fairly expensive(for Thailand anyway), but it's worth it.It's beautiful, with a lot of things to do. You will definitely make a return trip.

If your don't do stupid things your be ok.  Kept away of drugs and beware of anyone being just a little too friendly.  Oh yes one more thing.  The drinking age is 20.

I am here for 4 weeks - alone. It is safe. Just get a guesthouse at Rat u Thit mainroad and nothing will happen.

I've been there my first time I had 19 and I was alone. I didn't know what to expect because I didn't know nothing about Thailand and Thai people. (I went there because of a stop over that I extended to visit the country).

Is Thailand safe ? In fact, Thailand is pretty safe, it all depends on you. If you're nice and respectful, then no problem. There will be no problem as long as you understand that you're not in your country. Drunk or not, do not act disrespectfully. Thai people are nice but not stupid...

I know many foreigners who got f*cked up by Thais because they where drunk and over confident. Personally, I've never had problems coz I don't drink and my natural behavior is slow and respectful, even though I hang out myself with Thai gangstas...
