  1. no, i do it all the time; its nothing major,

  2. alot of times the check engine light come on for real basic reasons could be something to do with smog but if the car is still running fine than just take it to work.

  3. Chicago,  It won't damage emission systems, but you're not so broke as to drive by the auto zone and have it read are you?  Why don't you buy your own obd2 reader?

  4. as long as the light is on steady, you should not run into severe damage, but if that light is flashing then you have some serious problems.

  5. The check engine light is connected to all the vital parts of your engine, transmission and emissions. All of these components have a sensor or sensors that activate the light. The purpose is for you to see the light and take the car into the shop to be diagnosed. If the light is on there is something wrong, without a doubt, because it should not be on if everthing is working properly. Can you damage your vehicle? It just depends what is causing the light to come on. If the car is running fine and all the liquids, oil, water, fluids, are good. I would say that it is just an emission sensor. I would also say due to the year it is an O2 sensor on the exhaust. It is very common. The best thing to do is bring it in and have it diagnosed. An O2 sensor as well as many others is an ez fix. Locate the sensor, disconnect the wires, remove the sensor, replace it. Start the vehicle and it should reset the check engine light. Some lights have to be reset with the computer.
