Is John McCain a hypocrite?

John McCain is asking the press to lay of Bristol Palin because she is not running for office. However back in 1998, McCain had this tasteless joke about Chelsea Clinton.

"Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly?

Because her father is Janet Reno."

Chelsea was around the same age as Bristol is now. Why was Chelsea considered "fair game" in 1998, but Bristol is not in 2008?

Does anyone else here see the hypocrisy? Or is it just me?

wow i didnt know her dad was janet reno...lol thats funny...you know that may have hurt her feelings..but one question because neither are right...did it get headline news....and stay there for three or four days? with no end in sight..cause that is what we are talking about now...

I don't think it's hypocrisy to realize that 10 years ago were the wrong things to do.  He and Obama have said that family is off limits.  They are running this campaign with more dignity then previous campaigns.  Good on them both.

McCain is a total hypocrite and so are all the people complaining about Palin's daughter being dragged through the mud.

John McCain himself made the comment you quoted. A grown man in political office personally attacking the looks of the 18 year old daughter of a current president is despicable.

Barack Obama has said nothing about Bristol Palin, not a peep. In fact he has stated that the Palin family is to be off limits.

I see it. I think both situations are wrong. Bristol is still a child, and has alot on her plate.
