Is John Tavares supposed to be better than Crosby???

I see all this press about him and I don't remember hearing this much about Crosby years before his draft year. How good is he supposed to be???

Rating prospects based on scouting and minor league play is pretty unreliable.  "Supposed to be" doesn't really carry over to the NHL.  It all depends on how he develops and how he steps up to the new level of play.  Sidney Crosby is still improving, but has made a large impact on his franchise already (not as large as the media suggests).  I doubt he will be better.  Perhaps comparable.

Personally... I don't like to guage players by "supposed to be". I'd rather see what they can do. If Tavares is a great player, than we'll see it. If not, who cares if he was "supposed to be". Alexandre Daigle was "supposed to be" a good player and that didn't quite pan out. I think anything can happen in hockey.

Maybe you have amnesia. From where I sit there was a lot more hype for crosby. People still criticize Tavares for his skills. They say he's slow. No one criticized crosby for being anything but a hotdog. You don't remember the splash it made when he scored that behind the net goal in junior, lifting the puck on his stick and stuffing it in?

Crosby is the most hyped player since Lindros. And to his credit, he actually lived up to it. Certainly in terms of being a star and drawing ratings. That's pretty rare.

From what I've heard, read, and seen Tavares is a really talented player, however he gets bad rap for supposedly being slow and not always standing out and dominating within his age group(s), ie. at the World Junior Championship.  I mean if you look at his stats over three years with the Generals, they are very good.  I mean are you gonna pass judgement on a guy who breaks Gretzky's OHL goal scoring record in his 2nd season as a 16 year old with 72 in 67 games, plus another 7 in the playoffs???  I don't think so.

No, he is more compared to a Stamkos, Toews... great player but not the "NEXT ONE!" Some scouts say that he would have gone behind Stamkos this year if he was a week older and some say Tavares would have gone first. He is not quite at the level of a Crosby.

You didn't hear this much about Crosby? Dude, I heard much more. I've been hearing about Crosby when he was 14. I only started hearing about Tavares in January.

I have no idea who's better, all I can say is he will not look out of place when playing against Crosby or Ovechkin or Stamkos or any of the other young phenoms who have come into the NHL lately. He's at least equal to all of them on their first day on the job. He'll have a lot to learn but he learns quickly.

As a Leaf fan he has me praying for a real lousy season with no Cap'n Mats to bail us out.

Crosby is not the "next great one". Everyone gets all riled up by what the media feeds them. Crosby is good, don't get me wrong, but the next great one he is not nor will be. As far as Tavares goes, I honestly could not say, as I have yet to see him play. I agree with the above poster where there are a handful of better players than Crosby at the moment.

Crosby is the best playmaker in the league. If he could get a better scoring touch, he would be unstoppable.

It's not fair to John Tavares to compare him to Sidney Crosby. He will be John Tavares.
