Is Jonathan de Guzman the right man to replace Santi Cazorla at Villarreal - La Liga Debate
Villarreal have lost one of their chief destroyers to Malaga CF. With http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Santi-Cazorla-c32505 easing into his new surroundings in Andalusia, the Yellow Submarines have been left with a difficult task on their hands. A replacement for the Spanish international is required
at the club with the transfer window fast approaching the close.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/RCD-Mallorca-c40326 attacking midfielder, Jonathan de Guzman, has been named as a potential target by the El Madrigal outfit and a bid will be made in the coming weeks.
Cazorla has been an ever present figure at his boyhood club since 2002, establishing himself in the first team and going on to become an important part of the national team as well. The attacker has made 181 league appearances for Villarreal in a glittering
career that spanned eight years at the club.
The fan favourite came through the youth ranks of Real Oviedo before joining Villarreal. He has made himself a mainstay in the Spanish side that has won everything on offer. Replacing a player of his calibre would be a mammoth task. Jonathan de Guzman has
some huge shoes to fill.
The young Dutch playmaker will have a huge void to fill at Madrigal and cannot afford to deliver anything less than spectacular performances; such were the expectations from Cazorla as he took the club from mid-table obscurities to a title challenge in the
2008/09 season. He combined effortlessly with American-born Italian striker, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Giuseppe-Rossi-c15027, racking up goals a plenty in the process.
Guzman, for the better part of his career, has hid behind excuses as he shunned responsibility, shielding his shortcomings with redundant stories. He has greatly improved as a player since joining Mallorca from the Dutch powerhouse, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Feyenoord-c39258, on a free
transfer.
For a twenty-two year old, La Liga can become quite a daunting competition, though he has improved under the tutelage of Michael Laudrup. It was a good season for him as he made 33 starts for the relegation threatened club. As Guzman ended with five strikes
to his name, Mallorca avoided the drop and will be looking for a profitable season in Spanish top flight.
Considering Villarreal will be playing in the UEFA Champions League this time around and will be looking for a top four finish, again, a lot will be asked of the player who needs to replace Cazorla. Guzman might have the attributes to match the Spanish international
but he still has a lot physical fitness to work on. A bigger question to be asked is whether he can develop a chemistry with Rossi like Cazorla did. This will be integral to Villarreal’s offensive build up.
Guzman is not the only player on the Villarreal radar. They need not limit their options. The Dutch playmaker has to break into the national team; replacing the 34 times capped Spanish international would be easier said than done. Guzman has a habit of choking
on the big stage – a gamble Villarreal can ill afford.
The Yellow Submarine need a reliable and versatile attacker to take Cazorla’s place. Unfortunately, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jonathan-c18993 de Guzman is not that man.
