I'm off to Tokyo in December with my bro and want to see as much as possible, Ive heard that Kabukicho is a must see for all the lights and chaos but just wondered how safe it was and how much you get hassled as we don't speak Japanese.

Thanks :)

  1. There is no danger in Kabukicho, except that people will talk to you and try to take you guys to their bars and clubs.

Ignore them if you don't like.

  2. Police surveillance cameras are now on every corner of the district. So once in Kabukicho you will be monitored every minute. If you don't like the idea go elsewhere.

  3. No problems. The worst that can happen is some sleezy bar maid trying to get you too come into their pub where they try to rip you off as much as possible or some drunk Japanese businessman thinking you guys are famous and inviting you to party with them so they can practice their English..

  4. I'm a woman and walked around there at night with two female friends when we were all around your age and no one gave us any trouble.  Tokyo is a big city and you should exercise the usual precautions, but Kabukicho isn't especially dangerous.  The crime associated with the neighborhood is of the organized variety -- prostitution and racketeering.

As long as you don't do anything stupid like trying to pick a fight you should be fine.  The worst that's likely to happen to you is that people will call out to you trying to get you to come into a bar or strip club.  You don't need to pay any attention to them.  It'll be obvious that you're a foreigner so no one will expect you to have a conversation in Japanese or anything.
