Is Kaiserstrasse a red-light district in Frankfurt?

I'm going to Frankfurt for 2-days, and I'm looking for a hostel to spend the night.

This Stay and learn Hostel (http://www.hostelsweb.com/hostelsweb.com/hostel.php?HostelNumber=485) in Kaiserstrasse seems pretty well situated but I'm afraid it in a red -light district? Does anyone know the place?

Thanks!

  1. This is from a blog by an American tourist. It seems to indicate that the red-light district is near the main railway station in Frankfurt. So, if you can find a map of Frankfurt on the net, you will at least be able to see if it is in that vicinity.

Red light districts don't EXIST in the US or in many other places in the world. That alone makes them worth a look. It's very interesting to see how other countries try to deal with the ever-challenging problems caused by human shortfalls.

Another good reason to check out the Red Light districts is that it's a great break from looking at churches. Can only see SO many churches...

Strip clubs are also different in Europe.

I'm confident you can safely visit Frankfurt's red light district. It's located just east of the Hauptbahnhoft (main train station). As is the case for any nightlife, the overall scene is most vibrant as the weekend approaches. Friday and Saturday nights are best. There are plenty of clubs to choose from.

From my limited experience in the clubs, if you avoid buying drinks for any of the ladies, it's less likely you'll be ripped off. If your wife is accompanying you, I also think you'd be less of a target.

There are all kinds of little scams that go on in that neighborhood. For example, I once watched this wise-guy milk many of his fellow Germans dry in the sidewalk shell game he had going. I don't know what the trick was, but the Germans kept betting and he took them every time! So if you don't mind losing a little money (say $25-50), it's almost laughable when someone tries to pull something on you, even if they get away with it. Consider it part of the experience!

Don't stay out later than the crowds (~1AM), take a hike through one of the brothels (they're six-story-tall apartment buildings called "eros centers" - and, yes you can bring your wife inside...there are no problems or dangers). Have fun!

  2. Part of the Kaiserstraße near the Hauptbahnhof is a red light district.

While I don't know Frankfurt well enough to help you properly, I found this recent review that might help you:

  3. That's right. The streets Kaiserstrasse and Muenchenerstrasse is the bad areas in Frankfurt/M. Just watch yourself, but don't worry so much you will be OK. German Police are controlling the whole area day and night.

  4. lets just say don't wear askimpy top and a mini skirt!!

  5. The Bahnhofsviertel (around the main railway station), especially Kaiserstrasse, is the city’s red light district, although the ubiquitous seediness has developed into a popular and lively entertainment scene.

While I was working in Frankfurt I had to pass the red light district every day. I wore western clothes, but I always felt to rush. Whores and pimps are not the problem. The ones who might bother you the most are all these drunk people visiting this place. It;s not only the prostitution taking place there, also a whole lot of crime. Sometimes gangs (albanians/russians) are fighting there.

Frankfurt has much nicer places to offer than the area around the main train station! But.......just for 2 days, you might handle it.

  6. If you are worried, you can always make use of the IYHA/HI hostel in Frankfurt, Deutschherrnufer 12. It is big and has the charm of a hospital, but it is in a nice area with reasonable public transport connections and within walking distance of the old city with its sights. (I especially liked the Jewish museum.)
