Actually Kennington is quite expensive because of the cricket ground and its close proximity to Vaxhaull. It depends where in Kennington and what kind of accommodation. How you define 'safe'? Unless you plan to become a drug dealing gang member then you can probably live quite happily there.

Let's face it, these days anywhere you stay in London is as safe as any other place. I have lived in the Kennington area for 5 years and had no troubles.Kennington like any other Area in London has its good bits and its bad bits and it really comes down to avoiding the bad areas within any neighbourhood. There are some real hidden gems in the area too like Cleaver Square and a few very nice pubs and parks. They are also busy with an upliftment program in the elephant and castle next door which is doing good things for the whole area. Of course getting anywhere in London from Kennington is so easy that it really makes it a smart place to stay.

Dont listen to advice from people who have never stayed there because traditionally people fear the whole south London area where Kennington is located, rather trust me when i tell you its no where near as bad as those people will have you believe. Take a trip there to a pub on Kennington Park Road and check it out for yourself.

It's not a great area. I personally wouldn't like to live there, but I do have high standards. It's not unsafe, but it's not very safe either.

Pretty well anywhere is safer than Cowboy-land/Bush Country. Except for Iraq of course, but they exported their violence there.
